Felix Doubront has been named the 4th starter in the rotation, his first start will be in the first series game against Toronto.

No news on who the 5th starter will be, likely Bard though.

That's a tough first start for Doubront. I could see Toronto getting off to a strong start this year. They've had a great spring and that kid Lawrie is the real deal. Hopefully Doubront brings it and carries his pitching from the spring right into April.

I agree with you on Bard and I think that's the right move. There's just so much upside to him as a starter you have to let him find out what he can do when the lights are on in primetime.

Daniel Bard has officially been named the 5th starter.

Rotation is set & looks like this:

LHP Jon Lester
RHP Josh Beckett
RHP Clay Buchholz
LHP Felix Doubront
RHP Daniel Bard

Hey Iona, how do you feel about Padillas role? He has pitched pretty good this Spring. He could be someone that gets some spot starts out of the pen.

I saw that they picked up that option on him and cook I think, so I think as long as he stays healthy we will see him for sure. He reminds me a lot of the Colon situation with the yankees last year. I hope he accepts a bullpen role because you are right, he has been throwing pretty well.

What a great position we are in with the rotation they named. Plus they have options like Aceves, Padilla, Cook and eventually Dice K. I have a feeling that because of our depth Padilla might not stick all year tho, he may want to start for someone full time.

Looks like no Beckett for his first start Saturday at Detroit and possibly the home opener. He's in Texas getting his thumb looked at for "his own peace of mind" according to Bobby V. Aceves gets his wish and was asked to prepare to start Sat and possibly the home opener if Beckett isn't good to go.

Andrew Bailey is having a 2nd opinion on his thumb injury, looking like he may need surgery. Not good.

Beckett was checked out today & everything seems to be fine w/ him.

I still believe that the best scenarion for us would be to move Aceves into the 5th spot & Bard to the back end of the pen.

I wonder if there is anything to the talk of letting Aceves close and keeping Melacon in a setup role while Bailey is down. I say move Bard back to close and put Cook in the rotation he has out pitched all of them haha

Youre not lying about Cook, he has looked good this Spring.

This team just has a lot of uncertainty right now. Going to be a long season.

Yea the last thing they needed was a bunch of nonsense going on right at the start of the season. It was looking good until all these thumb injuries lately lol

On the bright side, all these contracts being handed out make the sox and Adrian Gonzalez look better and better everyday. Plus with the money Cain just got it makes so much sense to try and develop guys like Bard for the rotation. Be nice to see guys like Ranaudo join him in the rotation in a few seasons. One thing about this management team, they do seem to see the big picture and be ahead of the curve (aside from the way this Crawford signing has worked so far)

Early reports are that Bailey will be out 3-4 months. SMH

Beckett is expected to make his start on Saturday.

@PeteAbe: Bailey will have surgery on his UCL surgery on his thumb tomorrow, #RedSox say. Based on similar injuries. 3-4 months out.

SMH. We can't catch a break.

Its the Red Sox way, nothing can ever be smooth and easy!

I can't remember a season starting with this many story lines in a long time. I hope they hang 10 runs on Verlander Thursday (even tho he's one of my keepers in fantasy ha)

Bailey hasn't made it through the past 3 seasons healthy. It was bound to happen sooner rather than later.

Valentine has announced that Aceves will be the closer & Melancon will close on the days Aceves isn't available.

Tomorrow is Opening Day & I'm pumped about it, my boss is letting me off work early to catch the game. A lot of story lines going into the season for the Sox. My biggest thing for this team is staying healthy, IF we can stay healthy then we make the playoffs IMO. We have the talent to do it, it's just some of our guys are injury prone.

Other things I'm excited about seeing this season:

Dice-K, he's expected back sometime in May. What can he give us? If he can come back & pitch effectively then he will help our rotation out a lot & give us more options.

Carl Crawford, can he get healthy & stay healthy? If so I think there is no way he has another bad year like last year. I'm not expecting a huge bounce back year or anything but IMO there is just no way he can be that bad again.

Jose Iglesias, his defense is major league ready. Can the offense catch up? If he is able to start hitting the ball just a little better then he will be on the fast track to Boston. He could put a spark into this team if he can get the offense going.

Ryan Kalish, what does he look like once he is healthy & can stay healthy. At one point he was on the fast track to taking over RF in Fenway until the injury bug got him.

Will Middlebrooks, can he continue to progress at Pawtuckett. Youkilis has a club option for '13 & w/ the injury plagued last 2 seasons I'm sure the FO would love to have Middlebrooks take over at 3B in 2013.

Great last couple of posts! I am so ready for this season to start. I love that they have basically the same team as last year coming back including upgrades in the rotation IMO (No Lackey and Wakefield) and they are already being written off as possibly 3rd in the division. Completely the opposite of last year. I think this team has the potential to be not only fun to watch, but fun to root for unlike last Sept.

I actually got to listen to Bobby V on my way home from work today on his new spot on ESPN NY radio. He's going to be on with Michael Kay the Yankee's TV guy regularly. The tone in his voice when he made the comments about Schilling told a lot. This team is going to have good chemistry and shut a lot of people up this year.

I'm heading to New England tomorrow for Easter. Better believe I am leaving early enough to make it for first pitch on NESN!

Well, it always sucks opening up the season w/ a loss. Especially one like yesterday.

I thought Lester pitched very good yesterday even w/out his best stuff. He got out of a lot of jams. I liked how we never quit & rallied to tie the game at the end. If yesterday means anything then our bullpen will be a circus. Moving Bard to the rotation & then losing Bailey will hurt for a while.

Hopefully we can take the next 2 games & take the series. Go Sox!!!

@pgammo: Proof that Lucchino willing to listen on adding $--he called an NL GM about Oswalt, but was dissuaded from signing him

Also, Andrew Miller & Rich Hill will start rehab assignments in Single-A tonight.

Iona, how do you like this lineup once Crawford is back?

L - Crawford
R - Pedroia
L - Ellsbury
L - Gonzalez
R - Youkilis
L - Ortiz
R - Ross
S - Salty
R - Aviles

I would like to see Crawford up top, that would be the best if he was committed to it. I gotta be honest tho, I am over the Youk era and ready to move on. I know its splitting up the lefties, but Youk's best years are behind him IMO. I'm also not convinced with Ellsbury yet either, but I think in his mind his leadoff days are over. I would just switch Youk and Ortiz and for now stick with the Sweeney/Ross platoon. Sweeney looks like he could find a home here in Boston along with Ross. That could be a real effective tandem.

I know its only one game, but I am far more worried about the bullpen and the tough early schedule. I hope things don't spiral out of control early this year like last year.
