The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Here is the lineup & pitching for tonights game against Toronto:

Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Gonzalez 1B
Youkilis 3B
Ortiz DH
Ross LF
Sweeney RF
Saltalamacchia C
Aviles SS

Pitching: LHP Felix Doubront (0-0, 6.10 in 2011)

I'd like to see them try the one you had earlier with Crawford leading off to be honest. But I really like Lavarnway's potential, he will be around for a while when he gets his chance.

Youk is my least favorite Red Sox in a long time. My brother met him in Pawtucket and he said he was a huge prick, acted like he was a hall of famer, wouldn't sign anything or talk to anyone.

Youk is now 0-10 at the plate & looks lost. Will Middlebrooks anyone?

That may be true. I just don't think Middlebrooks is all that awesome. But you're right, Youk's time may be done in Boston.

He needs to work on approach or he could fall on his face, but he may have solid power. Not worried defensively, really. Just don't think he's an all star level 3B, and I think a lot of Boston fans (not saying you) expect that out of every prospect the team has.

I am excited to see what he, and other Sox prospects, can do.

There are 3 prospects in our farm system that IMO could be on the opening day roster in '13. Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, Iglesias. Those 3 all have enough intangibles to play in the bigs, but they still have things to work on. I think the one most ready is Lavarnway.

Before his injuries Kalish was going to be the RF this year. His shoulder surgery set him back. I wanna see how he comes back after the surgery. He is in Florida rehabbing right now.

Thank. God.

Now that we got that out of the way let's play some baseball.

I thought Doubront pitched effectively last night, he obviously threw to many pitched only going 5IP but I liked the way he worked the counts. As the season progresses I expect him to learn to keep his pitch count down allowing him to go 6-7 innings.

Atchison came in & gave us 3 solid IP. That surprised me.

Pedroia carried the team last night w/ his HR & 9th inning hustle 2B.

I think tonight is the game Red Sox fans have been anticipating, if Bard comes out & sucks it up that will give us fans even more ammo to say make him the closer, if he comes out & gives us 5-7 solid IP then a lot of fans will shut up about it. I'll admit, I'm anxious to see him pitch

Brentz for awhile last year was absolutely on fire. He and Jackie Bradley will play in the majors.

Your best prospect besides Xander is quite possibly Blake Swihart, he is just very very far away from the majors.

I'll admit. I don't know much about our lower-level prospect, I know of Brentz b/c he is from Knoxville.

What is your opinion of Lavarnway?

When I get home I'll have to look up Bradley & Swihart.

Our farm system is lacking in pitching, which we desperately need.

Bradley played at South Carolina the past few years. He seems to be one that is almost surely going to be in the majors, but kind of 'is what he is' and won't grow much more as a player.

Swihart is a switch hitting catcher out of high school... so he's farrrr from the majors, but has a chance to be a star if power comes along as he gets older.

I have read a few scouts that say Lavarnway is basically a poor-man's Mike Napoli. I think you signed Shoppach to give him another year to work on his defense. If Salty is a free agent after the year, Lavarnway may be the man going into next year.

All the names you guys have mentioned definitely have to be considered the future for this team.

Jmoore I agree with the prospects that should be in consideration for jobs come next year. Lavarnway in my mind will definitely be given a shot to at least split time with Salty. Iglesias and Middlebrooks will force their way onto the 25 man roster eventually and Kalish (provided he's healthy) will be a solid option in the OF, at the worst as a 4th OF.

I'm excited to see the development of Jackie Bradley and Swihart Dbake. I agree that Swihart has the highest ceiling and could be a star, but Bradley seems more of a sure bet to have a major league career.

It seems like the Red Sox are definitely entering a promising phase in the organization. They have a lot of money coming off the books and a lot of younger options right on the horizon. Being able to stock the major league roster with a handful of these guys will allow them to put that much more money towards positions of need (starting pitching)

Ideally, this season I would love to see them flip some guys like Youk, Aviles, Ross, Shoppach and some pitchers in packages for some younger prospects. With a few months of seasoning in AAA, I think they could get away with promoting the guys like Middlebrooks, Iglesias etc

Would love to see something like this next year as a starting point

C - Salty/Lavarnway
1B - AGon
2B - Petey
3B - Middlebrooks
SS - Iglesias
OF - Ellsbury
OF - Kalish
OF - Crawford
DH - Lavarnway/Ortiz (One more year!)
Bench - Sweeney

SP - Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, Bard, Doubront/Lackey
Pen - Bailey, Melancon, Aceves

That leaves about 5 spots open and so much flexibilty to rework the pen and resign guys like Ellsbury hopefully.

I think that would be a great balance between All Star caliber veterans and young talent. Despite the whole OF being lefthanded!

Question for you guys...

Who are some players you would consider trading, that might bring a decent return.

I've thought about this a few times, hypothetically, say Crawford decides to accept a role hitting leadoff and does well. Would you consider trading Ellsbury and what would you hope to get back in return?

Same thing with Buchholz, I would listen to offers on him. Maybe package him with Ellsbury for Matt Kemp? A player like Matt Kemp tops my wish list. Afraid thats only happening in a dream world tho, especially following that sale, they have to keep him.

That won't be happening. Just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong hah I don't think it's happening either. However, I think those are two guys that would be interesting to see what they could be flipped for. Ellsbury is going to command a ton of money and honestly there are question marks. Buchholz is another guy that when his time comes he will be paid. What has he really shown to deserve $80 million plus?

Ellsbury was better than Kemp last year, just for the record. I don't know when Ellsbury's contract runs out, but I think the Sox need to keep him around, even though he will be expensive.
