The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Report is that Ellsbury suffered a partial dislocation of the right shoulder, had an MRI & looks like no surgery will be required. He has been put on the 15 day DL & will likely be out 6-8 weeks.

Che-Hsuan Lin has been called up from Pawtucket as an extra OF.

Obviously this isn't good losing Ells & makes it even worse w/ Crawford out also. Ross will likely take over in CF. I'm just hoping this team can hold their heads above water for the next 2-3 months until everyone gets healthy.

Aviles will be batting leadoff today.

Minor League Roundup:

– Aaron Cook‘s sinker once again performed its distinctive sort of magic. He recorded 15 outs, 10 of which were on grounders with three more coming via strikeout. He was, however, slightly efficient than in his previous outing (a seven-inning complete game), as Cook tossed 81 pitches (54 strikes) over his five innings.

– Jose Iglesias was 0-for-3 but had two walks. For a player whose plate discipline has been questioned, that represented a milestone of sorts. It was the first time that Iglesias has walked multiple times in Triple-A; he had two two-walk games in Double-A in 2010.

– Will Middlebrooks continued the excellent start to his season. His two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth (this one to center field) was part of a 2-for-4 night that left the 23-year-old hitting .343/.343/.571/.914 with two homers in nine games.

– Rich Hill once again blitzed through a rehab outing in the lower levels of the minors. He tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit (on a groundball single to center) and had three strikeouts and three groundball outs.

– Bryce Brentz has been struggling early, he was 6-32 going into last night w/ 3BB's & 12K
s & no extra base hits. He didn't get the start last night but came in as a PH & hit a HR.

Will Middlebrooks continued his hot start in Triple-A today going 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB. He now has 3 HR's 9 RBI & his AVG. is .359.

Ryan Lavarnway struggled today going 0-3 w/ 1 K but had 2 BB's, his AVG. is at .214 right now.

Jose Iglesias had a good day at the plate going 2-3 w/ 1 RBI & a K, his AVG. is now .241. He also added a SB today.

As for the game today, what another huge win for the Sox at home. Especially w/ the lingering news about Ellsbury.

Buchholz looked awful early but settled down & went 7 good innings to pick up the W.

Aviles had a great day at the leadoff spot, Pedroia & Papi w/ 2 huge HR's & Ross w/ a towering over the Monster.

2 offensive out bursts on back to back days, hopefully they keep it up tomorrow w/ Doubront on the mound.

Aviles is back in the leadoff spot today, Jason Repko got the call up from Pawtucket & is starting in CF.

The game is on TBS today at 1:35.

GREAT home opener for the Sox today. Beckett was DEALING, he was going to come back out & try to get the CG but our offense left him in the dugout for to long. Offense finally put it all together. Just couldn't have asked for a better home opener IMO. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow & keep this going.

On a bad note: Looks like Ellsbury will be out a while, I'm guessing he either dislocated his shoulder or tore something. He was in a lot of pain.

What a game, what a weekend! Great to see Beckett back on track. With the confidence back in the offense its good to see everything falling into place. The bullpen is getting their ish together too thankfully.

What's the deal with ellsbury..any news on when he's supposed to be back?

It's good to see the offense finally click an swing the bats the way we're supposed to.

6-8 weeks was the initial word...the swelling has gone down enough that they are looking into it more today. Hopefully no surgery, some rest, rehab and he is back sometime in June.

Interesting quotes from Bobby V this weekend about Youk and his swing. He is backtracking pretty quick after Pedroia fired some strong words back in defense of Youk.

Bobby V origina quote...
"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason. But [on Saturday] it seemed, you know, he's seeing the ball well, got those two walks, got his on-base percentage up higher than his batting average, which is always a good thing, and he'll move on from there."

Pedroia's response...
"I don't know what Bobby's trying to do, but that's not the way we do things here," said Pedroia. "Maybe that stuff works in Japan."

New Bobby V quotes...
"People called him and said I said things he didn't like, I totally apologized. I said Jesus, last thing I want anyone to think is that I was criticizing you. ... I should have been more specific, your physical is about your swing, emotional is about not being happy when you don't hit a ball off the wall."

Sounds like a big back track to me mostly because he doesn't want a riff with Pedroia IMO. He wouldn't come out on the positive side with that one at all in this town. I had no problem with the original comments FWIW, I think Youk has a responsibility with his role on this team and with his production so far he is open to criticism.

Marathon Monday is here, I'm hoping Bard pitches as well as he did in Toronto, but with better results. Would be great to continue this momentum with Texas and the Yanks coming up next.

Bard spreading the wealth with 7 BBs to match his 7 Ks

Oh yea, but 3 to Pena and Longoria and 2 others to Jennings and Zobrist. I don't mind walking them as opposed to giving them good pitches to hit. Seems like his stuff was pretty nasty today, mixed in a lot more changeups and was very effective almost getting thru 7.

Sure you could argue that Bard shouldn't have been left in to pitch to Longoria (after K'ing him his previous 2 ab's) but this speaks for itself...

Oh, it was bad. Umpires aren't exactly helping their case to stick around so far this season.

As of right now they are saying no surgery for Ellsbury & he can rehab w/ rest. He is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

I can't blame Bobby V for saying what he did, it looked the same way to me. Youk has been awful to begin the season, although this past series it looked as if Youk might be seeing a little life.

I also can't blame Pedroia for coming to Youk's defense like he did either. Thats what leaders do & is there any doubt that Dustin Pedroia is the leader of that clubhouse now?

Bard looked great through 6 IP today, in the 7th he just got fatigued & started losing his control. His mistake was walking the #9 hitter on a 3-2 count w/ 2 outs in the 7th.

I also think Bobby V left him in to long, he should have been pulled before facing Pena.

Our offense didn't help Bard out any though.

The Ump had been horrid the entire game on calls like that, but that last AB was just flat out AWFUL by the UMP. No way I could have walked off the field like Ross did. I would have went right after the Ump after those bad calls.

Texas is coming to town for a short 2 game series the next 2 days. We will have Lester & Beckett going. We need to continue the momentum we started & pick up some more W's right here. After this Yankees series coming up the schedule gets a little easier.

Hey Dbake, remember when you said Middlebrooks needs to work on his plate approach? It looks alright to me :) he has been on fire to begin the Triple-A season.

Just a little jab there, Lol. I hope Middlebrooks can keep this up, we need him to continue to progress so we can let Youk walk at the end of the season.

I really don't understand why espn is making such a big deal about valentine's comments..it didn't sound too bad to me.

Last thing we need is drama in the clubhouse and players not getting along with the manager.

1 walk in 40 at bats is what worries me, but a small sample size
