Bianchi on Gators' PR masterstroke: Turn Brandon Spikes from villain to martyr
Admittedly, it was an absolute public relations masterstroke by the University of Florida when Brandon Spikes "volunteered" to sit out the entire game Saturday against Vanderbilt (what a sacrifice!), but please tell me you're not falling for it.
This was clearly UF's orchestrated attempt to diffuse a public relations nightmare and -- as every PR specialist will tell you -- try to turn a negative into a positive. Why else would Spikes, for the first time this season, actually decide to address media members who cover UF on a daily basis?
“I really don’t want to be a distraction to the team," Spikes said upon announcing his decision in the aftermath of his highly publicized face-gouging incident against Georgia."I want the guys to prepare without any negative things going on. I’m just trying to stay out of the way and just motivate the guys."
See how this works? Spikes, with one statement, goes from dirty player to sympathetic figure.
Brilliant, but predictable.
Excuse me for my cynicism, but I've seen UF pull the martyrdom trick before.
I take you back a few years ago to when then-UF Coach Ron Zook was getting barbecued after his mediocre first season at Florida. It was then that the school conveniently let it leak out that Zook turned down a contract extension because he didn't feel as if he deserved it it.
"We're going to do it the right way -- we're going to earn it," Zook said.
. Zook, at least temporarily, was transformed from embattled coach to unselfish martyr. It wasn't until later that we found out no contract extension had actually been offered. It was just a PR ploy to take some of the heat off of the Zooker.
Likewise, this is a PR ploy to take some of the heat off Brandon Spikes and Urban Meyer.
The Gators may be able to hoodwink all of you Johnny-Come-Latelies, but not ol' Mikey here.
Remember this, dear readers: "You can fool the baker and get a bun, but try to fool me and you get none!"
