The *OFFICIAL* Brandon Spikes thread (merged)

Spikes is probably responsible for that blinded eye the SEC sems to be turning away from them.

He was also seen coming out of the referees' locker room shortly after the gators were named the number one team early in the season. He was heard shouting that it was done so they wouldn't be able to see all the offenses committed against the gators and would call a fair game. Funny how it had the expected effect. That Spikes is a smart gator...

Just saw spikes decided to sit the entire game to avoid being distraction.

So IOW, he still hasn't really been punished at this point, but has been magnanimous enough to use this opportunity to self terminate to try to remove the egg from CUM and timmy's faces. Yup.. he's a real class act. I sincerely hope he gets drafted by the Raiders

Just heard on ESPN that he was taking himself out for the entire game. VOLNAT must have got to him or Myers.

strictly a PR move, so meyer doesn't do a reversal and spikes looks like an angel. if either Meyer or Slive had balls, he would have been suspended for the rest of the reg. season and reinstated for conference championship game. :banghead2:

Has Spikes given any statement as to why he did that? Other than the fact that he is a gator and that's just what they do?

I can tell by your post that you don’t understand NCAA football so let me help explain something to you. This is not like the NFL. You do not play teams in your division twice a year.

Scroll back and read. We were talking about a pretend recruit, not Spikes.

I love how Gator fans have no problem with this, but if Lane Kiffin says something like, "Bama should be number 1, not the Gators," he is a classless loser and that kind of behavior is unacceptable.

I didn't say that. In fact don't know a soul that did. I said at the time it was Kiffin complimenting up-coming opponent and was regular inconsequential coach-speak.

If I was a UGA player and saw that on the field, I swear I would punt his ribs into the student section. I can't believe his teammates didn't get his back for that kind of stunt, and that Spikes didn't get ejected.

If he isn't suspended the rest of the season, there is something gravely wrong with the SEC, beyond the horrid officiating that's taken place.

Yea, what they said

Obviously Spikes is cleaning up Urban's little mess. This decision came out of that meeting behind closed doors. Too much backlash---something had to be done. This way, Meyer gets off the hook---along with the SEC office. And somehow, Spikes looks like the good( NOT) guy. Truth is- all this does is make Urbie look like the Chicken crap he is.

I doubt anyone who was a fan of Meyer, or even neutral, is particularly influenced by Spikes volunteering to sit out the whole game. Really, if anything, it gives it another week to die down so that neither Spikes nor Meyer nor Tebow will have to face an hour's worth of questions about it this weekend.

I think you are reading way too much into the fact that Spikes is now going to sit out the whole game.

Hey Brandon...if you keep on gouging out eyeballs, Kommisar Saliva will have a lifetime supply of game officials!

It may have actually been Spikes’ idea to increase the suspension to a full game. After the incredible storm of bad press, somebody may have suggested to the kid that it was a pretty good idea.

Whatever.

This whole circus should not have been necessary. I can’t say that Florida used the best PR judgment in its handling Spikes situation. What Florida didn’t seem to understand was that from a public perception standpoint, sitting the kid for only a half was almost worse than not suspending him at all.

Florida has gotten hammered in the media this week and most of the damage has been self inflicted. There is also the possibility that this will cost Spikes when it comes time for the media to pick all-conference and All-America teams. If it comes down to Spikes and somebody else for an award or honor, all some voters are going to remember his hand inside Washaun Ealey’s facemask. Is that fair? Probably not. But if you’re Florida—or any school–you just can’t make these kinds of decisions in a vacuum. I’m not saying that media reaction and public perception should dictate these kinds of decisions, but don’t you have to at least CONSIDER it?

Here is what should have happened. First, somebody at Florida needed to look Urban Meyer in the eye and say: “Coach, this isn’t right. It’s got to be for a full game. We’re going to get killed in the press.” Then Brandon Spikes has to stand in front of the media in Gainesville and say just three sentences: “This is not who I am. I lost my temper in the heat of the game. I am sorry.” Then it’s over. You ask for forgiveness. It is given. Then Spikes, who has had an otherwise brilliant career and who I think is a good kid, doesn’t get defined by 20 seconds of video.

Florida made the classic political mistake. They took what could have been a one-day story and let it become a four-day story. Here it is Thursday morning and we’re still talking about it.

Maybe Spikes mitigates the damage by this decision. But some damage has already been done. And the sad thing is it didn’t have to be this way.

Spikes will sit whole game. Will Meyer be joining him? | Mr. College Football

There's no such thing as bad press- just ask Lane Kiffin and the Vol Nation.
