The Official Chicago Cubby Bears Thread

Is he that young? God, he seems older.

I still don't think he's going to be an elite shortstop. I just don't think he'll overcome his defensive shortcomings. He's got a 5.2% walk rate in 2,000 plate appearances.

He's like 23. He was as good as Andrus through their respective first two year. Power increase could make him a lot of fun to watch. Castro just probably isn't the problem haha.

They'll add either a really good HS bat or college arm to the farm system in june. And can spend moneys before long, hopefully.

Oh they have money to blow for sure. Just sitting on it until the time is right.

If Cano wants to dip his foot in the proverbial FA waters, there will be a nice bidding war for him there.

My list (in order):

Ohio State
Alabama
Red Sox
Celtics
Mets

I was arguing with somebody early last season (maybe on VN, maybe in real life) who thought the Braves should try to package Simmons and a pitching prospect in a trade for Castro to fix the SS position. It would be nice to revisit that conversation now.

They need to be hit over the head because I'd rather have Simmons.

Probs agree, but Simmons is 6 months older than Castro.

Simmons is so ahead of Castro defensively though.

Also, you are discounting Simba's offense. I know it's an extremely SSS, but he had a .333 OBP last year and won a batting title in the minors.

Oh, I think he can hit. Don't worry, I'm fully afraid of Simmons becoming really close to a star. He's awesome. Just not exactly ready to write Castro off. I've always liked him, hopefully power comes soon if defense doesn't.

It really isn't close to me. Castro will probably end up being a better hitter, although we don't yet have any idea by how much, but the difference defensively is huge. Simmons is cheaper and under control only a year less than Castro is. I wouldn't have traded Simmons for Castro straight up last year, much less with a pitcher thrown in.

Castro was 4th in the league in hits in 2011 and 16th in 2012.

Simmons won't come close to that. Castro's power is starting to develop. He might not be on the defense level Simmons is, but he is good enough right now. Simmons isn't exactly head and shoulders above Castro and I don't expect him to ever be.

And saying simmons had a .333 OBP in a small sample is nice, what about Castro's .336 OBP over 1700 ML at bats.

Dan Uggla had a higher OBP than Starlin Castro in 2012 by 25 points.

Hits are nice, but if he's going to be .300 with a 5% walk rate, he's not going to be an elite player, unless he develops serious power.
