The "Z's official Pistons plan for the offseason."
1. Offer Stan Van Gundy the moon.
2. Re-sign Greg Monroe. He's a stud and can be a building block here. If he wants the max, give it to him.
3. Trade Josh Smith for whoever is willing to take him. It doesn't matter what you get back. Trade him. He's a cancer.
4. Draft a SF. I don't love Brandon Jennings by any means, but I'm willing to give him another year. I think Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is going to be really solid, so I would not take any other two guards. I would be interested to see what Rodney Hood could do in a Pistons uniform. Intriguing option would be Aaron Gordon. He isn't a great shooter by any means (although this is SSS, he did shoot 35.6% from deep on 45 attempts) but he does everything else on the court and he has solid basketball IQ.
5. Find shooters off the bench in the offseason. Kyle Singler is a really nice role player and can stretch the defense. Him and Jonas Jerebko really help but they need another shooter whether at the one or two to help stretch the defense.
It's almost August, so let's review.
1. This was the biggest get for the Pistons in five years. I cannot wait to see what SVG does with this team.
2. This hasn't happened yet but I still think the Pistons are going to bring him back. SVG wants to keep him and I think Monroe wants to stay, but they are just off on money. I don't think a team is going to offer him the max so Detroit should be good to go.
3. SVG is playing this just fine. We don't have to trade Josh Smith right now. The Kings want to make the playoffs this year and think Smith can help them. Just wait until the Kings get desperate and make the move. Even if they don't, then still trade Smith.
4. This couldn't happen because we didn't have a first round pick, but Spencer Dinwiddie is a great value pick so I was happy with that.
5. Jodie Meeks for $20M is pricey and I'm not a huge fan of that contract, but Meeks provides a huge need and gives you a valuable 6th man. KCP can play some 3 too so I'm not worried about the fit. As long as he doesn't take valuable time away from KCP I am okay with this. D.J. Augustin was a great get and a great signing. He's inconsistent, but he really thrived last year and will really help from outside. Caron Butler is a meh signing and I'm not sure I get what SVG was thinking here. Wasn't really a fan but it's basically a one year deal and there is no such thing as a bad one year deal so it's whatever. He will help spread the floor and give some physicality on defense, plus you need some depth there with SVG saying Smith won't play any SF if he stays.
