The Official Joe Gibbs Racing Team Thread

They just said that he's alert and awake, but they're going to take him to the hospital just to be sure. Hopefully it's just a concussion and nothing really serious. There's no race next weekend, so with any luck he can be ready to go at Martinsville in a couple weeks.

Lets hope

Hamlin was airlifted to a hospital per ESPN

- Denny Hamlin was airlifted to a hospital Sunday after colliding with Joey Logano on the last lap while NASCAR's newest rivals raced for the win in a thrilling finish at Fontana.

However:

According to Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs, Hamlin "will be OK."

Interesting fact:

Busch picked up JGR's first victory at Fontana, the only track where the team had never won. Toyota also got its first Fontana win.

Kyle Busch's victory was his 25th in NASCAR, completing his ninth career weekend sweep

I didn't say I liked him. Kinda heartwarming to see him not take anyone's ish.

Oh and look at Tony crying over the same stuff he does.

From Denny Hamlin's Facebook:

Update on Denny: He an L1 compression fracture in his back. He hopes to be released today, fly back to North Carolina and be re-evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates later this week.

No word at this time if he'll need surgery or miss any time on the track.

From JGRs Facebook page:

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin was evaluated today by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates after suffering an L1 Compression Fracture during an accident on the final lap of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

Dr. Petty determined that Hamlin will not require surgery, but will need time to properly heal, which is estimated around six weeks time. Dr. Petty will make the determination when Hamlin will be able to return to racing this season.

No decision has been made on a replacement driver for Hamlin during his absence from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Who do you think takes over the #11 until Hamlin is back? I'm thinking Sadler would probably be the top choice. He or Vickers, but Vickers has the deal with MWR and will probably be in the #55 for Martin at Martinsville and maybe Richmond.

I kinda forgot about the wins getting you in the Chase. If Denny returns to form after returning, I see no reason why he doesn't get at least a win or two and is in.

I feel bad for Hamlin getting hurt through almost no fault of his own, but if this actually plays out, or even it doesn't, expect NASCAR to correct this problem in the offseason. The notion of a guy missing 5 races and still winning a championship is laughable. I think they should and will add the caveat that you must start all races to be eligible for the Chase.

Vickers is in house already. Makes more sense.

He may be running NNS for JGR but he is being groomed to take over for Mark full time in the #55 next year. Doesn't surprise me at all to see MWR loan Mark out to get Vickers more seat time.

It'll be interesting to see how Mark performs in JGR equipment. He runs pretty well for MWR, but it still quite isn't on par with JGR.
