The Official NASCAR Talk Thread

Hendrick Motorsports says that if Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Cannot race next weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon will fill in for him in the #88. However, there has been no determination of how long Earnhardt, Jr. May have to be out of the car. He will need to be cleared by a neurologist before NASCAR permits him to return to the car.

That would be cool seeing Gordon make a return at Indy.

Not going to lie. I would like to watch that. That said, there is a great potential for that to be terrible. He hasn't been in a race car for over half a year, no telling if he is in decent enough shape.

Not that you have to be in great shape for nascar.

I think he'd be fine

They were talking about this during practice today, this is the 3rd time he's sat out for a race(s) due to concussion. But good for him for putting his health first.

Now this question is, does he basically have to win a race to make the Chase? If he only misses New Hampshire I don't think so. If he misses two in a row I believe it does.

Third concussion, not good. Makes you wonder what advice the doctor will give him and if he'll even be back. I know he loves racing but his long-term health should be more important to him. He sure don't need the money. Btw, I am a Dale Jr. fan and just want him to do what's best for him.

In the end, Jr will be cleared by doctors, and he'll be the one racing at Indy.

I'll be surprised if he's not in the car for Indy. They say he believes it happened after Daytona and Michigan. Instead of taking a trip to the infield care center and getting looked at he took it straight to the garage at Michigan and then at Daytona just fixed it on pit road and went back out. I think it was silly of him to do that at Michigan, he took a good lick and should have went and got looked at. Daytona I can see why he didn't, he didn't tear it up bad but he popped Danica hard.

I agree with all you said. I think this proves his long-term well being is more important to him and I'm glad he did it. A lot of great athletes have had problems with concussions.

Nascar doesn't have the balls to take a win away from someone, even if found intentional(not saying it was). The 15 pts and $$$ don't mean jack to race teams that are already in the chase.

He has a win already anyway so even if they took it he'd be ok.

No matter what they do, Drivers/teams/owners don't care as long as they make the chase and get to keep their bonus pts. If they penalized the 15 points from the chase standings and disallowed the bonus pts for a win, it may open some eyes.

Who knows, could have failed due to a part failure or contact on the track. We'll prob never know.

I doubt it was intentional, but they play it so close to the line.

Dale Jr. Update:
According to Jr. on his podcast...
"The symptoms that I have are balance and nausea. So I've struggled with my balance over the last four or five days, and I definitely wouldn't have been able to drive a race car (last) weekend. So making the right decision really was out of the question. I made the decision that I had to make."

Sounds like it'll be a lengthy deal.

I figure if he's out for Indy it'll be a while before we see him back.

Wouldn't be bad for him to sit out the rest of this season and try to regain his health.

Agree 100%. I read an interview on Jayski's where he said he would "strictly take the advice of my doctors." I could easily be wrong but most doctors are pretty conservative on these types of injuries.

And yeah, waaay too many commercials on NBC. I thought DW was bad on Fox, but Jeff Burton don't know when to shut up. JMO

Everything I'm seeing on Facebook and Twitter is saying we should know something tomorrow. If he's out this week, like I said earlier I'll have to wonder for how long exactly he will be out and if his career may not be in jeopardy. If I remember correctly earlier this season after the All Star race he mentioned retirement but it was only in passing.
