The Official NASCAR Talk Thread

Watching this old race it's unreal how much it's changed. There have been at least half a dozen spinouts that didn't bring out a caution. Now they make up reasons to throw the caution.

People want close racing and NASCAR vcan justify it under the premise of safety.

I would be curious to see what the average margin of victory was back then along with the number of cars on the lead lap.

Today’s racing isn’t as pure as in the past, but it delivers a better show I suppose.

I suppose. I can remember watching races and the biggest suspense was whether the leader would be able to lap the field. Of course that was as entertaining to me at least as the artificial close racing we get today.

I really don't have an opinion on him yet. There's just something about seeing the #3 putting someone in the wall on the last lap to win the race that's nostalgic.

You make a good point with that. I was never an Earnhardt fan, contrary to a lot of his fan base I liked Dale Jr because he was his own guy, he couldn’t help his namesake. He was a good dude and genuine, met him a few times and he’s always been super nice, signed autographs for everybody and all that.

As for Dillon, I just think he’s a bit arrogant. He may end up being a helluva little driver, I can’t help but feel like he wouldn’t be where he’s at because of his grandfather or he’d still be in NASCAR just wouldn’t have the equipment he does.

Cars back then would draft and run in packs but they’d separate, when the strongest engines would take over.

Late 90s in to the mid 2000s they would do that, you’d get 5 or 6 guys who would break away from the pack a bit. 2004 Daytona 500 if I remember correctly for the last part of the race Dale Jr, Tony Stewart, and Kurt Busch ran nose to tail for the majority of it.

Yep, and Kurt Busch was a lap down I believe.

There’s been some good plate packages in the past. Namely 01. Unfortunately the same package that resulted in Earnhardt’s death.

I remember reading somewhere that the drivers were nervous going into that race because of the aero package. It was the same one they'd used the previous year at Talladega when Earnhardt came from like 15th to 1st in 2 laps. They changed it mid year if I remember correctly, because the 2000 Daytona 500 was a snoozer.

The 2000 Daytona 500 was the reason for the aero package change. Earnhardt himself had a post race rant with the media. Ironically, the change he called for ultimately resulted in his last win and his death.

I swear, there may not be a more petty driver in NASCAR than Denny Hamlin. My goodness.

My 10 year old niece would have been over this in 15 minutes.

A relative works in a high up position with Mac Tools and attends a few races each season for relations. He’s in deep with most of the drivers. Denny Hamlin is a pompous ass and his least favorite to deal with professionally.

For some reason that doesn't surprise me at all about Hamlin. Then reading his Tweets about everything just confirms it. I honestly wasn't aware Bubba and him were feuding lol

I have a differing opinion on Hamlin. We did a lot of sim racing back in the day and he seemed like a good dude. He always took interest how we were doing and how things were going in our life.

This was around the time he entered the cup series.

I just know what I've seen when I've seen him at Bristol, he don't want to to sign autographs for people and he didn't seem very approachable, which I understand that about autographs to an extent. He don't have to sign for anybody. That don't mean that's just how he is but that's the impression I've got of him.

I really had no problem with him until he just flat out dumped Chase last year at Martinsville. It made for great entertainment though. Problem was not necessarily that he dumped him it was that he flat out took him out and junked him and there was no reason for it. Denny is a helluva race car driver but that was garbage.
