The angle he got hit in by the Lajoie car is what concerns me. The flips and stuff had already weakened the roof bars, but even if they were in perfect condition, race cars are really built for a hit at that angle.

Hans device is more of a support for front to rear movement. No safety expert but my understanding is that Hans may not have been much help in this situation. Really hope that's not the case.

It went sideways so I doubt there was anything at all to ease the hit or hits
 
And a HANS device, or any head restraint used in Motorsports, mainly stop front to back movement (think a line between the steering wheel and seat). It appears he got hit on top of the head which would far exceed what any helmet is capable of stopping.

It's crazy that as safe as these cars are they still build these cars with no support from a direct hit. It's like Watkins Glen installing the gravel pits to slow down drivers after the tragedy of JD McDuffie
 
Dunno if it's true or not but I read they erected barriers so the crowd couldn't see
That's what they do to extract a body
