The Official PlayStation 5 Thread

Obviously this didn't happen overnight or even over the last week. Billion dollar deals don't get done like you're trading baseball cards over recess. The timing of the announcement was almost certainly influenced by the Activision purchase but you can bet this has been in the works for months and months.
I think it was reactionary, yes. But no, I don't think think it happened overnight. I'm sure exactly what you're saying is right - Sony either got wind of the Activision move and then started on this, or maybe they've been working on it since Bethesda, but either way they're having to play catch up.

Evidently the deal has been in the works for over 5 months and Sony is going to acquire more this year.

These rumors have been around awhile. Bungie does have a new IP they started a couple years ago and I think I heard it's only a year or two away.

Hope they keep things across platforms and PC.

I doubt Sony would be able to swing that deal. JMO
Do you mean just in terms of money? Sure they could. They have 18 billion in reserves just for mergers/acquisitions (well, 14.2 billion now). I believe Square/Enix is currently valued at just over 2 billion. Now is Square/Enix willing to sell? Thats another story. But to me, they would be the next logical purchase based on their working relationship.

I figured they'd go after Square Enix and Konami to lock down Final Fantasy and Metal Gear. Getting Tomb Raider and Castlevania would be a nice bonus too. The Bungie acquisition is a head scratcher to me.

From what I can gather based on what I read, Sony isn't really buying Bungie for IP. They are buying them for their online gaming/gaming services expertise. Sony really doesn't have an IP issue, they have a man power issue when it comes to their online multiplayer infrastructure and services and Bungie has a staff of 900 employees with experience and expertise in these areas. These are areas where Sony is decidedly not strong in. As primarily a PlayStation gamer, I'm pleased with the acquisition because it does the most important thing that acquisitions like this should do. It fills voids. It meets needs. Did Sony overpay? Yeah, probably. But why should we care? It's not our money, LOL. Still, Sony's not stupid. I'm sure their "bean counters" weighed the cost vs benefit and determined that it was worth it.

Good point. I do look for them to pick up something with major IP if they do more acquisitions though. If nothing else Sony also a major movie studio and can capitalize on IP even without making games.

Its funny you brought that up. Bungie said one of the things that attracted them to being bought by Sony was their movie division. They are interested in possible future expansion into film and TV with their IP's.

Maybe they like the look of whatever Bungie has in development. Sony does tend to get in on new IP early and help build it.

Still, if they bought Konami or Capcom they could hand Bungie a bucket of franchises to reimagine and have a ridiculous back catalog for Spartacus.

That's less than the PS4 during the same period. The demand is also much higher as well.

I don’t deny the shortage, just salty all of my plans got ruined for buying a new 3080 last year. But we can’t deny 17.3m is a lot. And that’s just one console. Hopefully this turns around soon. Someone I talked to at a dealership the other day said they expect stock to get back close to normal in 6-12 months.

What were the numbers for the PS4?

Meh I'll just stick with PS Plus Essential. Until Sony "cracks the code" on figuring out how to emulate PS3 games to run natively, I will not support a service where my only option is streaming. Playing games over streaming sucks and I have some of the best internet in the country.

I must say streaming over Gamepass is much better than PS Now was. I play certain things on my Series S that way with no issue. I chalked it up to the slow wifi card in my OG PS4. I had hoped the updated one in the PS5 would fix that. I take it that's not the case?

But at least with Gamepass, streaming is just an additional option. It's not your ONLY option, which is my issue with PS3 games on PS Plus Essential.
