The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

revisionist history. UCLA didn't pay his buyout otherwise he would have taken the job. he stood up in front of a bunch of microphones and said as much.
YEP - he was good as gone except they couldn't come to terms on the final contract numbers, meaning the buyout.
Sometimes the hiring university puts in the contract they are paying the buyout to the other school - other times they put in the contract that they are giving the coach X amount over time to reimburse buyout.
Age being a factor, Barnes wanted UCLA to take him off the hook for the buyout to UT - UCLA wanted to give him cash across time to pay back buyout.

Yep. It always seems that the "shooters" we get somehow struggle once they get to campus. I still think there's a fatigue factor involved. Barnes doesn't go deep on his bench and the effort these guys expend on defense is going to impact your legs at some/various points during the season. It seems to be the one constant in our shooters struggles over the Barnes era. At least that's my theory.
When both Milicic and Ziegler were held out of action for the Fla game, both came back after the rest and shot the lights out with 21 pts apiece. I think the fatigue factor is real considering the short bench and the energy used on defense. And when they go on the road, I think both mental/physical fatigue is noticeable.

I don't think the game has passed him at all. We lost the games this year because our players did not execute well enough to win. Last night our players had a bunch of turnovers, poor passes which prevented players to shoot the ball in rhythm, missed foul shoots that would have allowed us to play without having to come from behind, allowed Kentucky players to shoot open shots, and missed open shots. Barns nor his coaches made those mistakes. When our players play well, we win. When our players don't play well we lose.
Who is ultimately responsible for us not having shooters

I guess our run of 5 weeks as the #1 team in the polls fuels some of this angst now that we've dropped 5 league games. Stuff happens - like Lanier missing that last FT in Nashville.

The numbers say Barnes is arguably the best coach we've ever had. Winning is winning, wether you average 70 or 90ppg.

Dominate SEC football programs do it with defense. And great pitching is the hallmark of baseball champions. Softball, too.

Carr sucks. He won’t do anything at Baylor and will be in the portal again after next year.
Heard so many people last night talking about how we’d have won with him last night and it’s the dumbest thing ever. Nothing we saw indicated that guy would have played at a high level in big moments in big games.

Barnes is a very good although frustrating coach, and is paid a salary equal to that. I love Barnes the man who is a great example for his players.
Now the truth of todays SEC. Are fans noticing the rise of the SEC. In every sport. Making it through a football, basketball, or baseball season above .500 is quite an accomplishment in the conference these days. The league is attracting the best coaches and athletes across the country.
I find myself getting frustrated losing games, in any sport, that I think were winnable. The truth is, mental and physical exhaustion, along with injuries and personal life can change day to day, that we don’t take into account. Even we fans aren’t at our best everyday. That’s why winning a NC is so sweet for fans, but much sweeter for the players and coaches.

Same group of posters come in here after each of the few losses we have every season and say the same tired ole crap. It's like that segment of fan base have no real understanding of the game. It's sooooooo predictable but ultimately harmless.

Yep.

This place is so embarrassing now.

I have no idea where to even start.

My critique of Barnes this season is that we have a team full of role players and none of those roles apparently include creating their own shot.

The coaching staff needs to look at how they're developing players and stop relying on the portal to find an offensive spark every season and hoping that it works out well.

Yes, I know that we're currently a top 5 team but this team with its many deficiencies is getting exposed quite a bit during the SEC schedule.
Need more than 1 spark, need a team of shooters.

You guys who want to discuss Barnes, Barnes retiring, Barnes record in March, etc. etc., please do so in this thread so we can keep the game threads focused on... the game.

[We had a thread like this before but it vanished when a bunch of threads were mistakenly mega-merged.]
Thanks Freak but maybe give them their own website to moan and cry about!

Wow, I didn't think this even needed a thread. I mean I'm fine with it being one, I just didn't think that many people are unsatisfied in respect.
I know there have been a few far outters that would like to see Barnes go, but I'd like to think any sensible Tennessee Basketball fan knows we're lucky to have him.
He may or may not be able to get over the hump in March, but he consistently gets us there with a real chance at winning, too. Once a team gets to the tourney they always has a chance to get hot from there.
I honestly feel we got hosed in that Purdue game last year with Edey getting away with all the fouls. IMO it was egregious. We win that game and we in final four where anything can happen.
That all said, I also don't see or have a problem with criticizing Barnes as a coach.
It just kinds comes with the territory of being a head coach, but as far as where he has this team, I'm completely satisfied.
Would have been more satisfied beating those blue b@stards tonight, tho. 🫤
Lost 3 years in a row to teams that got hit at the right time and went to the final four with one going to National Championship game. I would say we have a darn good coach.

Pearl’s teams here after Lofton left were a pretty hard watch until the lucky E8 run. His last two teams here were 75th and 90th offensively on kenpom. The latter team had two McDonald’s All Americans in the starting lineup too.

Rick’s E8 team was legitimately one of the 8 best teams in the country, not a team that just got a really lucky draw and cashed in.
Pearl does a better job when his players play with a chip on their shoulders, like his first Tennessee team. 5 star kids are hard to coach because they don’t want to play hard. I’m sure there’s some exceptions.

I agree, I’ve watched practice, it’s grueling. Better off to lose first round of SEC tournament and get some rest before the Big Dance.
