The Official Super Bowl XLIII Thread

there's nothing like whining about the refs after losing the biggest game they've ever played in.

you know what, the steelers had the hold that cost 'em a safety, and on the ensuing possession the cards scored a TD to go ahead. then they get the ball back with 2.38 to go, and get another holding call. it's first and 98 to win the game.

and what do they do? they go down and win the darn game. Despite the calls from the refs.

what the bellyaching is really about is the understanding that you had the game won and you couldn't stop Ben and Santonio when you had to.

remember, despite all the "terrible calls" you all are crying about....the cards were winning the game with less than 3 minutes to go in the Super Bowl.

at the end of the day, they were presented with an opportunity to save the game, and the STeelers were presented an opportunity to win it.

we took advantage of it, they didn't. Winners win, losers cry about refs and replays.

I think you are confusing a lot of us that are unhappy with the officiating with Cardinal fans. I thought the officiating was pretty bad and this was probably the least interested I've ever been in the outcome of the Super Bowl.

No doubt they made the plays down the line. But when there's a blanent no call on a celebration and a highly questionable turnover, that changes things a ton. There's a big difference between having to throw a bomb at the end, as the Cards had to, to having to score on a 35 yard pass. Plus, Arizona would have likely returned the kick close to midfield, changing their overall approach with only a half field to score and 2 timeouts. With that in mind it really annoys me to hear the Steeler's fans act like there was absolutely no possible aide to their victory and any thought that there was is nothing more than whining.

Considering how improbable the James Harrison TD was, the Santonio Holmes final catch was, and one or two other crazy throws Ben made to avoid sacks... I think it's a bit absurd to say anything is impossible. I realize hail marys hardly ever work, but with all the big plays that went on in that game the Cardinals deserved their shot to create one more.

There's really not a big difference. Arizona's final snap was at the Pittsburgh 44.

anybody happen to catch PTI, around the horn or any of NFL total access this afternoon or tonight?

varying degrees of agreement that:
the harrison play is one, maybe the best, plays in super bowl history.
while they maybe should have reviewed the last play, after reviewing the play over and over again, by and large, it's agreed it was the right call.
the refs weren't good, but were not the reason the cards lost or the steelers won.
Big Ben probaby should be the MVP, though no one can, or will, find reasons to say Holmes shouldn't be either.
Holmes's catch apparently ranks in the top 3 or 4 best catches in super bowl history, most agreed that Tyree's catch is likley #1.
That Super Bowl XLIII is one of the top 5 super bowls ever played.
That the Steelers organization is the best in football, and top three in all of sports

some interesting debates today about all this stuff, not really surprised at what i heard.

then they shouldn't have fumbled the ball away with 5 seconds left.

How about the blatant no calls the two times Warner removed his helmet while on the field? That's that same penalty that went against Lamarr Woodley on the Waner fumble. On the first incompletion/fumble, Warner pulls his helmet and starts jawing with the ref while still on the field. And on the incomplete pass prior to the punt that put the Steelers at the 1, Warner again pulls his helmet off in disgust while on the field. How did the refs miss both of those?

And the fumble by Warner was reviewed in the booth and the call on the field was upheld.

According to NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira, the replay official upstairs did see the play clearly. “We confirmed it was a fumble,” said Pereira. “The replay assistant in the replay booth saw it was clearly a fumble. The ball got knocked loose and was rolling in his hand before it started forward. He has to have total control

It's so easy to say "that's that, quit complaining" when your team is the winner, but if the outcome and happenings were flipped, Steeler fans would be whining and us ambivalent ones would still be questioning the calls just the same.
Bingo.

It's not a Steelers' fans thing, just how all fans are for the most part.

i get that, it just seems that most of these comments are coming from people that claim they don't care or simply hate the steelers, which is at the very least AS BIASED as my defense of the steelers.

I didn't really understand the way AZ managed that last possession in the first place. Granted there's not much they could do in 38 seconds, but they went relatively short a couple of times and then Warner was winding up for a Hail Mary with 15 seconds left. They had time to try at least one more out route to get closer to the endzone. Another 20 yards down the field and they might have been able to think about an actual play call rather than just heaving it up for grabs.

i dont either. but defense wins ball games, they shouldnt have let pittsburgh score in the first place

I don't think they did. A review would have been nice. We were forced to sit through several minutes of reviews for pretty obvious calls.

instead, they fumble. maybe they should have been given a do over.

we didn't even contemplate throwing a party. the wife and i knew that we could only watch with folks that wanted to watch, and were steeler fans.

just had one other couple, my parents, and my wife's dad's old college roommate over.

it was pretty cool for bieng low key....all chanting "Here we go Steelers" and waving our terrible towels in my sports room......good stuff.

what a great night.....

i had my 8 year old son a super bowl party. the house is still covered with steeler decoration and i don't know when that i will take them down.

the Harrison personal foul and the holding in the end zone prompted my gf to ask if they (stealers) always played this dirty.

they are not dirty, they are physical. my son gets the same crap when he plays football and basketball. he's aggressive and usually manhandles the softer kids. he does nothing illegal but alot of the parents accuse him, an 8 year old, of being dirty. i assume that their attitudes are why their children are soft to begin with.

Punching a man while he is down like a street fighter has no place in the game. Im sure it takes place in piles but this occured in the open where he had to have been aware of the view. It was garbage.

for the last time, there was no punch thrown. it was all open hands. you are thought when blocking to keep the defender down. how can he make a tackle if he's on the ground. i'm a coach and i encourage it between whistles.

Congrats Steelers fans on you're win Sunday night. Hopefully you're last call bar hookups wont bring back any bad memories on such a positive night..

newsflash:
the official on the feild called it a fumble.
the replay official didn't bother buzzing it down because he said it was a fumble.
the league head of officials said it was the right call.

next.

Big ben should have gotten mvp. Without those plays he pulled out of his rear, the steelers don't win that game.
