The Official Tennessee @ #18 Kentucky Game Thread, 7:00 PM ET, ESPN2

The third down holds were so inexcusable, that UK was at 3rd and 8 at one point and the announcer was like, "well its 3rd down,, now kentucky has them right where they want them." Then they converted the 3rd and 8.

I'm happy for the win. I think both the players and coaches on the defensive side of the ball need to earn their scholarships/salaries. If we had been playing a top offense and had been that ineffectual for 99% of the game, I would chalk it up to lack of depth; but we were awful from their opening drive, and we were playing against the offense that is ranked 12th out of 14 in the SEC - as in, only South Carolina and Vandy are behind them, and we made them look like the Greatest Show on Turf.

Giving up an 80% conversion rate on third down is inexcusable, all the time, period. Any D-I team that has scholarship players and paid coaches should be able to do better than that. South Carolina held UK to 16 points; UT Chattanooga held them to 28.

Yeah but the defense still played over 75% of the game(45:19), also provided 6 of the Vols points, all while the offense only played less than 25% of the game(13:43).

So while you may think they are terrible, and I’m by no means saying they are stellar, but they did have to carry the team to victory no matter what way you want to spin it. That’s like feeling comfortable sky diving if your parachute only has a 28% chance of deploying.

Vols defense have had a pick every game this season if I am not mistaken

Looking at stats ...no way Vols win that game ...good to be other end of winning a game that all tells you that you shoulda lost.

Some interesting notes from Lexington newspaper:

-This is the second time since 2016 that UK has had over 600 yards of total offense vs. UT and lost. In 2016, the Cats outgained the Vols 635-599 but lost 49-36 at Neyland Stadium.

-With the loss, Mark Stoops is now 55-53 (since 2013) as Kentucky head coach. That moves him past Bill Curry (26-52 from 1990 through 1996) as the coach with the most defeats in UK football history. He is 2-7 against the Volunteers.

-With the loss, Kentucky (6-3, 4-3 SEC) also saw its all-time record as a program drop back to .500 at 635-635-44.

-The last time the Wildcats beat the Volunteers in back-to-back seasons remains 1976 (7-0 at Neyland Stadium) and 1977 (21-17 at Commonwealth Stadium). UK last beat UT three out of five in 1958 (a 6-2 win in Knoxville), 1959 (20-0 in Lexington) and 1962 (12-10 in Knoxville).

-UK was 130-0 in its history when it scored at least 42 points in regulation until tonight.

-Kentucky has had two other teams finish with nine regular-season victories: the 1949 edition and Mark Stoops’ 2018 squad. Both of those groups, like this one, lost to Tennessee.

Schadenfreude is great.

Ok, after reading so much about the lack of a facemask call I googled it and found the following:

“No player shall grasp and then twist, turn or pull the facemask, chin strap or any helmet opening of an opponent.”

In the NCAA and NFL, twisting and turning is key
Unlike the high school rules, the NCAA rules book does allow brief or incidental contact to the facemask that does not include twisting or turning. The NCAA rule makes clear that simple grasping is not sufficient to draw a penalty— there has to be more than just fingers to the facemask:

SO..... did he twist or turn the QB's head when he contacted the facemask? Not sure he actually GRASPED it at all. Bet we hear about this from the league officials. Anybody got solid clips or info that would support a flag due consistent with this data? If not then the over the top on field protest by their coach is not a bad call either.

It was a penalty. Refs must not have seen it.

Looking for Stoops to be fined by the SEC.
