Hoping the BaseVols win, make money off NIL, and the players and families post about it on social media.

never said anyone was self-centered. Never said NIL money was a bad thing it good thing in this thread. But keep trying.

And I’m still hoping for a win today. Hoping even more that this team will get their heads on straight and turn the season around.

This team is bewildering. Yes, 8 starters gone from last season, but talent is clearly there. Pitching, coaching are there, but clutch play & excitement are void at times. SO, is it youth, NIL $$ (jealousy), indifference, or that other teams are just better?

You are blissfully misinformed. 99% of college baseball players make NOTHING of any material significance financially from NIL. In fact, most leave with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt due to their fractional scholarships. The big NIL money is reserved for the 4 and 5 star recruits at Neyland or TBA. Baseball doesn't hardly even get the scraps. Plus, parents or relatives of athletes have every right to be on this forum. They just shouldn’t be subjected to ignorant personal attacks on their kids or relatives.
Still better than most. I got no financial aid. Took me until I was in my 40's to pay off my college and post grad debt. I know you're referencing the difference between baseball and the other sports and I agree. They should get full rides. Still, I wouldn't consider any aid to be "scraps". The vast majority of the students don't get anything but bills. No offense. Just venting I suppose.

I wouldn't blame it on the freshmen tonight:

Dreiling went 2-3 and is hitting .328
Tears went 1-1 and is hitting .353
Kendro went 0-1 and is hitting .286
Gotta be honest, I know we've not got a lot of game experience, but I think there's an argument to be made for those guys getting more playing time. I know they keep guys in the program with the idea that their time will come, but at some point, you have to start thinking about shaking things up and giving these young guns a real chance to show what they can do. Some kids look great in practice, but don't come through when the lights are on. Others seem to have that "it" factor and seem to find another level when they're in the spotlight. This season is rapidly slipping away. I'm no coach, but I think I feel confident in saying that this team can now be considered who they are based on the body of work so far. Yeah, I know we might suffer through some growing pains on defense, but it seems like that's not a strength anyway so is it that big of a drop off with some of these young bats? Guess these tough decisions are why Tony V gets the big bucks. Let's hope he pushes the right buttons, but I'd get these youngsters on the field a lot more from here on out....and yeah, I'm saying start 'em.

The vast majority of students don’t have the commitment to represent the University in athletics which involves a tremendous commitment to conditioning, the weight room, daily practices, travel to/from games, etc. it’s like a full time job.

Agree the personal attacks need to end, critique but don't criticize.

The NIL money does seem to flow mostly to the directions you mentioned but even baseball scholarship money is hard to come by...

The NCAA scholarship limit remains at 11.7 per team. Dividing 11.7 scholarships among a college baseball roster that includes more than 40 players is a tricky and frustrating business for a coach.

“It’s the worst part of the job (recruiting)” Tennessee coach Tony Vitello said. “I was meeting with kids from East St. Louis once, afraid to make an offer. You’re waiting for the sticker shock when you say, ‘We really love you but – oh by the way – your family will have to pay $30,000 the first year.’ ”

SEC baseball keeps growing, but the scholarships don't. Tony Vitello wants more. (knoxnews.com)

I have yet to determine who the best 9 are in my mind. I still struggle with certain ones and then they show out for a game or two and I go, oh well, then back to struggling. I think it is a problem right now getting consistency. And I will agree that what you see in practice or scrimmages is not what you always see in a game. I agree that there are just some athletes that have the it factor, I call them gamers, who just turn it up when the lights come on and compete, and others that do not, melters. I've not posted a lineup due to my position but I cannot imagine trying to figure out each weekend, game who is going to compete and who is not, who is hot and who is cold, who is going to turn it on and who is going to hide. I don't think for a second that it is lack of desire but just something not clicking mentally, or emotionally, or physically. Again, they are college young men.

College has become nothing more than big business due in large part to the proliferation of student loans. When I went to UT Knox the tuition was $1300 to $2100 per semester depending on how many hours you. Obviously did not include room & board. But look around the country at how large colleges and universities are growing. UT has been erecting new buildings all over campus at a dizzying pace. All in the name of higher education when in reality these universities are little more than massive debt machines.

But it is a choice, right? They choose to play athletics.
