The Official Tennessee Shriners College Showdown Games Thread (Friday 2/16 8PM EST) (Sat. 2/17 8PM EST) (Sun. 2/18 7:30PM EST) (FLOBASEBALL TV)

Really not wanting to get ahead of myself here, but my impulse says this team looks much better than last years team. That does not mean we go to Omaha like last years team. But this lineup feels to have zero gaps in it. High average hitters from top to bottom. Peebles behind the plate is a massive upgrade. We look to have Friday and Saturday starters nailed down. We have an extremely efficient long reliever.

Things left to see: Sunday starter. Need to see Burke be a little better. Need to see more of the bullpen, however I’m not too worried about that.

Extremely encouraging opening night against a tough team, in a tough park.

Doesn’t change the fact of why Burns role was changed at the time it was.
I don’t think anyone can blame tony for yanking him out of the starting lineup. And if they do, they’re insane. The season turned around for us after that.

And Burns became a viral sensation for his closing apps, rather than his infinite ERA.

The reality is it gave the team AND Burns a huge shot in the arm. Both were excellent after that change after being largely mediocre prior. Of course, I give tons of credit to Dreiling’s unbelievable HR against Vandy for being a huge momentum changer too. I still don’t know how he got a barrel on that perfectly executed pitch.

And need those SS options to get healthy: Antigua, Perry, and Curley. Adding those guys will provide an even scarier offense. And Antigua at SS improves the defense, allowing Moore to play his better position of 2B.

Absolutely. The addition of Antigua will be an extreme positive imo. Exciting. Hate starting out back to back seasons without our SS.

Top 10 draft choice if he stays healthy. Just has elite stuff... Can’t imagine starting trio of Russell, Beam, and Burns. Oh well, guess it wasn’t meant to be. I have tons of confidence in CTV and CFA and think our pitching staff is as deep as anyone’s. I hope Sechrist crushes it.
Or even a Russell, Beam, Lindsey starting trio, had Lindsey decided to return.

Going into the season, we had no idea AL would be as good as he was and would be gone after one season. I bet we have a few on this roster who are like that. Maybe Dallas is our 2021 Tidwell or 2022 Beam. Or maybe Causey or Snead or Phillips or Stamos is our 2023 Lindsey or 2022 Dollander.

My take on last night's game...

-Pitching will be strong
-Hard to tell on defense as not many balls in play, but imagine it to be solid especially when Anigua returns
-Lineup is strong (I love the C-Mo, Peebles, Amick, DH role, Tears gauntlet)
-has some holes that I feel will be exposed in SEC/deep tourney play...1) not sure Ensely is a great fit at leadoff. Wish we had a high OBP guy there and could slide him into the 8-9 hole. I do love him as a player and he is a warrior, just would love to see someone with a different skillset in this role. Maybe Antigua fits this? Maui hurt us last year in this role...we need to figure it out 2) Burke is not a 2 hole hitter. Doesnt move runners, strikes out too much, not enough balls in play. Love his power but in reality, he feels like the biggest hole right now. 1st AB looked better but man he looked rough after that. I know it is early, but the problem is last year he looked the same and most of his damage was mostly non-league play. Not sure he is the answer for 2 hole? or even starter at this point. Hope I eat crow on this. I like the kid and think he has loads of talent. But to get back to Omaha, he will need to hit better or be replaced. I'm sure he will hit 280 and 15 HR's but in clutch SEC/tourney moments he has to give better AB's against off speed.

It’s too early to bench him. I mean he’s likely to break the HR record this year.

But the people who are saying his slap swings at pitches 2 feet off the plate in an 0-5 night isn’t an issue are also wrong.
