The Official Tennessee Tech @ Tennessee Game Thread Tuesday April 18, 2023 6:30 PM EST SEC NETWORK +

We could greatly cut down on the threat of tipping pitches if we could keep guys off second everytime someone gets a base hit. We're better at holding than last year.... because we're actually trying, but man, we need a difference making catcher. Keep thinking about the impact the kid from LSU had on us when we were on base. Kid had a bazooka!
It's not the catcher. Pavlony had/has a rocket arm and he had difficulty throwing runners out.

The season trend is concerning, sure, but just a reminder that, on its own, last night doesn't mean anything.

"Midweek college baseball games in and of themselves aren’t something that should get anyone twisted. Top-ranked LSU lost to Louisiana on Tuesday, and fourth-ranked Vandy lost to Indiana State. More than a handful of ranked teams lost midweek games this week, and that happens almost every week. Unless you lose a significant number of midweek games … meh, you’re fine." -- Rucker
While that's very true, the quality of arms we throw on a midweek game is elite. They shouldn't get hit like they did last night against a mediocre opponent. Zander Sechist would be the ace in many power 5 conference teams. There's something teams have figured out and it goes back to late last year.

One of the worst coaching jobs I've seen on The Hill. IDC if we had lost 15 players... this team is WOEFULLY undercoached and their "give a ****" is alarming. To get your ass kicked by TN Tech is an embarrassment on all levels. Any "good will" TV built up from the last couple of years will be evaporated by May. I had much higher hopes for him, but it looks to have been fools gold. Typical UT.
Doom and gloom. All new starting lineup yet it’s a bad coaching job? Interesting.

SEC teams get beat by non power 5 teams all the time. Just look around the league last night for great examples…

On a different note: Hope Zach is not as bad as many are saying. Prayers for him.
it was deflating and sickening to witness Zach’s injury last night. When he dropped his glove and dejectedly walked off the mound, my heart sunk. He’s been through so much and has courageously shared his mental health struggles as a example for others (and will likely help others seek help). I sincerely hope and pray that it’s not as bad as it looked. Zach deserves so much better.

The current technology of the wrist bands reduce the threat of stealing signs tremendously. Tipping pitches tends to be subconscious “tell tell” traits by the Pitcher. It could be the way he grips the ball, or the manner he holds his glove, or some other consistent mannerism he subconsciously does when he throws a certain pitch. Or, it could be a last second defensive adjustment based on fastball vs breaking ball. Lots of ways to tip pitches.

So very sad.

You really should get out more.

Wonder what he will say? What else could he say that has not already been said? The boys have to make the change. They have not forgotten how to play baseball. All mental at this point.
couldn't agree more. A total head game. Guys hitting slumps is part of the game and always has been, but it seems contagious with our group right now. One game could make the difference. Imagine how electric the crowd would be on Friday if we come out hot? Crowds have been quite dull this year to be honest even in the A&M series. Just something to shake up the vibes and get the boys going

Exactly!

If that is a weekend game, A.J. 'Au Jus' Russell pitches scoreless ball into the seventh. Volly & Camden shut them out late for the win.

Of course you are, that’s you, the day you come on here and say, “No Hoover this year.” Is the day I come find you, drag you there…to the VIP section. You’ve earned it.
OH, we will be there, 66! Appreciate your efforts & enthusiasm for Vol Baseball. At my age, I suppose B.V.S. just rears its ugly head at times. I imagine that CTV & his staff are even more alarmed & confused. That said, GO BaseVOLS!

I’ve seen a lot of tape and analysis on these guys. They rarely, if ever, are tipping pitches. It is a lack of execution and not being able to locate. Mental aspect is huge. I believe some have lost confidence and focus. Burns is a good example. He was struggling and got pulled from the rotation. He was able to mentally get back in the zone and get back his laser focus…then just had one of his best outings vs Ark.

Anger is a bear. Ignorance is bliss, though.

Wonder if we've self scouted to see if there is something we're doing?

Has there been word on his injury yet?

Has anyone else noticed weird tendencies with our defensive positioning? Last night it seemed our SS and 2b playing almost straight up the middle even with runners on base. Seemed to have huge gaps between 1st and 2nd especially with a lefty at the plate and Burke holding the runner. Also doesn’t seem we do nearly as much of the hard shift with a lefty that happens when we are batting.

The scouting reports apparently say that we can't perform the b word that rhymes with runt.

And, from what I have seen, the scouting report is correct.

Middle infielders (SS and 2B) will play up the middle (aka double play depth) when there’s a double play in order. If either SS or 2B played in the hole, it effectively takes them out of ability to turn double play. I do recall a bottom in the order lefty for TTU who was a weak hitter (IIRC) and they were playing him essentially as a right handed pull hitter (SS in hole and 2B up the middle positioned closer to 2B). They get this from spray charts and their overall scouting reports.

I’m sure we have. I personally think a big part of oppositions success is the big 3 are no longer unknowns, hitters have a full year of film on them, utilize advanced technology like virtual reality simulators and advanced pitching machines which mimic velocity and spin rates. Plus, I think they are trying to be too perfect with some of the deficiencies we’ve shown both at the plate and in the field.

Exactly this!

I don’t think we are tipping pitches as I tried to go back and watch a few hours to see if I saw anything(to be fair with film you can watch a lot closer and certain pitches and find something) and didn’t. But what I did see was a decent amount of 0-2,1-2,2-2 pitches over the heart of the plate getting nuked… so if you ask me missing on pitches way ahead has been a problem. But with that it can all be fixed and if you go back and watch burns from Sunday he looked a lot sharper!

I promise you a pitcher or two are tipping pitches. I thought it was happening from umpiring but had a former pro hitter watch and could tell 95% of the time the pitches. I have been amazed by the things in pitchers that this guy can see. He could tell me almost to a T when our pitchers were picking also. It is tiny things but it is tips. I have heard Burke and a few others do the same thing when announcing SEC games. It is tiny things but they are dead on. Things that I do not think many college guys will see but some coaches will.
