Vols beat Cornbread Maxwell in 1976/77 if I have my year right. I was student at UT and we barely beat them and fans were a little upset as we had good team (Ernie/Bernie/etc). However, UNCC went to final four that year and probably should’ve be in final game. I believe coach was Ray Mears. UNCC beat us in Charlotte sometime within last 10 years. I was at that game too with my UNCC grad wife. I never heard the end of that one!

I went to the Clemson region in 1996.
Vols lost first game to West Virginia (whom we beat earlier in season)
And struggled back to make finals needing to beat CU twice.
Vols fell behind but struggled back to get bases loaded in pouring rain when the umps picket that second to stop the game. 8 hours later. New pitcher, no momentum,, only plated one run I believe and lost

That game between Tennessee and Clemson had 4-5 Olympians on the field. Saw the former Vols and Tigers play Cuba a few months later in Chattanooga and Atlanta

I don’t think they have a choice as to when they play. I think the #1 plays the early first game so they do get a few more hours to rest.
