Good points on the Vols earning the right to host, I agree. And I wish they were because I would be there with my kids pulling for them and loving the great atmosphere and baseball.

My point is both teams earned this and either would feel slighted/cheated had they not been selected. And my opinion is if the Vols wanted to host they should have won more games, don’t blame the NCAA or anyone else for something which could have been taken care of on the field.

Regarding Hall/arm care, I don’t know enough about how a college team manages their pitchers to comment. Would we care if Vitello did this, I am guessing no? I think it is a stretch to consider this as having any bearing on anything other than a team fighting to get to Omaha.

Who is we? Guess again? Vitello or Anderson would not do this.
Second, Because they are good Coaches they don't have to resort to this.

Desperate Coaches do Desperate Things. Was it a 153 pitches in a 3 day period? Pushing it.

I can't speak for the crowd but I can GUARANTEE you I would call Vitello out if he threw a kid this much in 3 days. That is abuse. DVH did it and others and I have called everyone out. I had never heard of this guy until this week so he is not a famous college coach. And I have been around it for years. I don't keep up with mid-majors that are not consistently on the national scene and getting to a regional is not on the national scene. But when it comes to a guy who has a future, you are supposed to protect it. People on here trash V and A for not pitching some enough, including mine, but they will never be accused of pitching a kid too much. Coach A is passionate about getting guys ready and successful at the next level. He has said it many times in my presence to different players or parents that his concern is not just what can you do for me but making sure he makes them better for the rest of their lives in baseball and life.

Agree. I called out DVH and Corbin numerous times and I would call out CTV if he did this.

The good thing is, I know CTV would not do this to his players.

IDK and he has become happy with his role, maybe not completely satisfied, but understands his role. I think because they know he can go all three days in a weekend and want him if they get in a bind. He is second now in all time appearances for a career and in a season and bumped himself and some guy named Helton from second to third. So he is second and third in season high appearances. Plus like 6/7 in career era. If he comes back next year and pitches the 30 innings he has had last 2 years he will blow the career appearances out of the water and I don't see anyone touching it. Plus he is second in SEC appearances this year and like 11th in NCAA with no one above him still playing. So that will be his legacy on the field which is not near as important as his legacy off the field. I don't say that to brag but to help understand how he/we deal with it. The appearance thing has made it easier for him to handle the short appearances. One of our guys said the other day that everyone wants to pitch as often as Kirby but no one wants to come into a game in the situations Kirby comes in or be in the bullpen as much as he is. He went 18 straight appearances with at least 2 guys on when he came in.

I don't post here much and I have never met your son but IMO his biggest legacy will be what a terrific teammate he is. He is an example for my grandson and other kids with how involved and supportive he is when he's not on the mound.

A buddy of mine got tix to the regional final this past weekend and sent me pics of Kirby with his sons. They were absolutely glowing!

Everybody talks about our future stadium. I don't think it will matter once the NCAA finally gets pushed out with all the conference realignment in the next 3 to 5 years. Go play today and win wherever you play.

I'm glad our coaching staff cares about players health.

Wait a minute! We lost a host opportunity to that dump?!

Thanks for the input on arm care, you would know better than I on it. I understand it’s not good. You and everyone have never heard of Coach Berry and have small samples to form an opinion of USM/him. I know the type of man he is and the impact he has made on and off the field the last 20 plus years he has been at USM. As you know, you don’t have to be a famous power 5 college coach to have made an enormous impact on the lives of the kids you coach and the community where you coach.

Anyway I am going to move on from these debates, and I probably have taken it too far as a Tennessee fan on a Vol message board. See y’all in Omaha.

Some of you all are missing the point. When selecting the host site for super regionals involving teams of equal seeding, there are only certain things taken into consideration. Those things include the bid itself from both schools, the availability and quality of venues, guarantees and potential revenue. These are the main ones that are the determining factors. USM apparently outbid us, they are deemed to have more availability which increases the potential revenue made for the NCAA. Now… you can argue that there was bias based of who was on the selection committee and that we’re Tennessee and everyone hates us (mostly true). But if we’re looking at just the criteria involved, I see why the NCAA chose USM. They want their money. And if USM ponied up more than we did, then so be it. We don’t know the cold hard facts of how much was bid and everything else so we’re just speculating. Who cares at this point. We’re gonna go beat them anyways, rain or shine.

Let’s talk about the series and matchups. From most metrics available on paper, we look like the better team in almost every category. We have the pitching advantage and the better offense. We’ve played better teams and in tougher environments. We have the experience and confidence that makes me think we can win this in 2 games and pack for Omaha. BUT, this is postseason baseball and we’ll have to come ready to play. If we play like we did in the regionals, make your reservations for Omaha.

My point above on winning more games was not comparing win total to USM. My point is avoid this problem and debate by winning more in the season and being a top 8 national seed.
That’s somewhat analogous to “take it out of the ref’s hands” before the games are decided by the refs…..it sounds good. It makes sense. It doesn’t always happen.

One could go back and look at the season and say the Mizzou series cost us a National seed. Likely so in hindsight. It’s a very hard thing to win a ton of games in the SEC. 4 of the teams left were barely above .500 in the conference.

I got in an argument with a person on the Athletic that said “Southern Miss is the best team in Mississippi”. Seems logical on the surface but head to head SM lost to OM and MSST (plus got crushed by Bama). Yes, this is a small sample size and these were midweek games. The other person came back with comparative records across the RPI top 50. SM played 17 games against such opponents, Ole Miss played 37 (The “grind factor of the SEC”) Also, where do these opponents fall in the Top 50 (that’s a HUGE span and the SEC has 8 of the top 12 RPI teams)? an example is TN has played 19 games against Top 8 RPI teams (10-9 record). SM….zero. Who you play where and when makes a TON of difference. Since the SEC crushed Ole Miss and MSST and SM “made their hay” in a much weaker conference, we ended up comparing NC records and RPIs for the 3 Mississippi teams (that’s when OG quit responding):

Non conference record and RPI

Miss St 19-5 RPI 48
Ole Miss 18-5 RPI 53
Southern Miss 15-8 RPI 61

“Just win more games” isn’t so easy in the SEC and I would guess SM would be closer to the other Miss schools than TN if they were in this league….

By RPI, we will be the best team SM has faced all year. They will be the 8th best team we have faced.

Respectfully, the key thing here are “assumptions” and “apparently“ they outbid us. Unfortunately, any time humans are involved, there is not only the possibility of bias, it is highly likely (just look at the world at large).

The NCAA brings a lot of this on themselves. They post “criteria” but then don’t seem to follow it (Alabama over TN in CFP. High NET, low seed in the basketball tournament). Heck, even with this, they provided the “criteria“ but then said “ultimately it’s the committee‘s decision“. They could just “show their work” but never do…..

The BCS comes to mind. There was a formula. We could bitch all we want about the criteria but anyone could plug in the data and spit out the results. How is a room full of old men making decision based on “flexible criteria“ they can override by vote better?

I have half a day left to find tickets before I cancel this hotel reservation. I've never seen NO tickets available in the secondary market.

I hope all of the players on the team know how cocky and irritant the southern miss fan base is being right now. Y’all that make it to hattiesburg talk as much **** as possible

I think it'd be preeeeeeeety obvious I was in an imposter lol.

We will take any deficiency you have and present it as feature and selling point and that only IF any says anything and THEN, if they want to actually DO anything about it.

Just look at the leaders in our society, it's what they do. My guess is, the fans may or may not complain, but within a few hours, they will 100% not care. It's what we do with an obviously compromised president, it's what we did with the refs IN THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Missed calls, replaying downs etc excluded a small market team (Cincy) from playing in the Super Bowl.

I think you could be tying your shoe with your back turned calling balls and strikes getting half of them wrong and what exactly would happen? Nothing. It'll be 93 degrees, so the alternate line judge/umpire would rather stay in the shade.

Good day.

I SAID GOOD DAY!
