The official UT QB controversy thread

A few years ago Simms greatly outplayed Bray in the Orange and White game. Don't let one scrimmage convince you that Peterman is a better QB. He might be, but to base it on a scrimmage is pretty silly.

How many practices does it take for a former SEC starter to lock down the top spot against Freshman, redshirt or otherwise?

Last year at the vandy game Worley was clocked throwing 51 mph. If Peterman has more zip, then he has a cannon for an arm.

We have 4 decent quarterbacks and no named starter. 1 has experience and has not separated himself. Seems like a valid thing to discuss while we wait on the opener.

He has experience in another system. All the guys are learning. Would you expect Worley to pick up on it quicker than the others? Sure. However, not doing so doesn't make him a total scrub.

For me this is one of those things I don't get too worried about. The coaches see both qb's way more than we do so I trust their judgment.

Doesn't mean they won't get it wrong. If they do than hopefully we find out against WKU or AP.

I agree, I'm not anti Worley either. Certainly raises questions as to why he hasn't been the mental and vocal leader and done the other things to take that spot. Hence the discussion.

I think if there is no clear cut winner for the qb position, then Worley would get it with him having game experience and being a Junior. Plus, he is the qb getting his picture made in the new uniforms fwiw.

I can't help but wonder why in the world JW has not created more separation? If it is neck and neck in the next couple of weeks go with Peterman. Worley has live game experience and he is a junior as well, which makes me scratch my head.

The way it seems although being flat in the only open practice doesn't help set the concrete so to speak. I'm sure Simms was in program guides too.

I just like the fact we have more than 1 choice...

That's not good this close to the season really.

There is an old football saying "if you have two starting quarterbacks, you don't have one."

i saw this last year and florida had a good year.

however, i think there are a lot of problems when you don't have a starting qb named and actually think florida's offense would have been better if that had been the case last year

I think the lack of discussion shows how far Butch has come without even coaching a game. Almost to a person there is calm that we have several possible options and faith that CBJ will make the right choice. Hats off to him. Most SEC fans would have this issue at the forefront of their message boards if it were them in the same place. I know FL fans discussed and debated it a lot last year. I didn't even have to go to their boards to see that. They came here and did it.

I believe the biggest indictment against Worley is inability, as a third year player, to separate himself from three freshman. If he hasnt by now I would not hesitate to go with the future now. Always have the ability to bring him off the bench.

Which is why I think this all spells out that Butch is slow playing Worley. So that when he takes the spot from him it will be because he gave it away.

The coaches are aware. They are in place for a reason, and we, the fans, are on these message boards for an entirely different reason. I support UT, no matter which QB is starting. GBO!

I think Wiedmer was making a case not the only case. Plenty of intangibles have been discussed by Butch and that only a seasoned vet could typically claim in his arsenal to put this to bed.

Pocket presents
Poise
Command of the offense and respect of his peers
Confidence

On that front I've heard more positive comments on Ferguson as quotes from his peers and coaches.
Butch said Riley had pocket presents.
Unnamed teammates were quoted as saying his confidence was infectious.

Since when did it become a "controversy"?? We've got 4 great guys fighting for the starting job. Pretty good position to be in I think. Doesn't a controversy usually involve something nefarious or negative? Haven't seen anything like that so far, certainly don't expect to. :hi:

I don't think it is a good position to be in....I pray CBJ is trying to simply make Peterman and Worley man up with pressure from the rookies.

Let me start by saying that I support whoever brings the wins. That being said, I am pulling for Peterman. I have always been an advocate of a more mobile QB. The ability to move around and be a threat to tuck it and run adds a whole other dynamic to the offense that the defense must prepare for and worry about. It adds the chance to prolong a play that might allow a receiver to get open. I'm in no way saying that Peterman is the next Tee Martin but look at how many times Martin's mobility led to big plays. Anyway like I said, I'm for whoever brings the victories be it Peterman, Worley, or Jim Bob Cooter.

I'll add that IMO if Worley was never good enough to use as leverage to Bench Bray in more meaningful minutes in the times we saw Bray needing an attitude adjustment that also speaks to Worley's readiness to lead this offense. JMO.

I've read all the negative opinions on Bray as he went undrafted with a resume full of SEC losses. Worley had a couple of chances then to take advantage and didn't. Bray did take advantage of those same chances when presented. I think one of our freshman will too.
