The official UT QB controversy thread

If he was confident already he would have named Worley the starter. I'd venture to guess even going into game one the highest aknowldgement for Worley from Butch will be that he will start the game. I have nothing to believe he'll earn a ringing endorsement that Worley will be the man for 2014 until something else gives. Meaning he either starts seperating himself more or starts crumbling. All accounts I have read said he wilted some under the lights last night at a time when he should have showcased why he's the man.

Don't disagree, but my first post that you quoted had nothing to do with any of that. I simply was pointing out the fact that everyone is jumping on Peterman and Dobbs train, but things need to be kept in perspective.

You can take away as much from the open practice that you can from the O & W game....which is very little.

Peterman it is then. dust settled.

I'm actually not lobbying for a guy. I'm more bringing to the surface that we've been pretty blasé about what would in most SEC camps be a fairly debated topic. We did with Bray and Simms. This thread will pick up steam as the days tick down to kickoff and Worley continues not to get the nod from Butch. After that open practice Butch certainly isn't now going to endorse Worley. Maybe at the close of this week he might. I doubt it.

I will support whoever our field general is come Austin Peay. That being said, I have really been paying close attention to Riley Ferguson. Personally, I think the sky is the limit for this kid. The intangibles he brings to the table (poise, awareness, pocket presence, confidence) are immeasurable in the SEC. I think it comes down to him and Peterman, because Worley just simply hasn't proven himself to be the clear cut winner of the job. And being a junior and having had experience in SEC play, that concerns me. I really like JW, but I think Fergie could be the man. Go Vols!!

In getting more and more uncomfortable about our offense as we get closer to kickoff.

I'm with you and my concerns start and end with us not having an established QB. Our RB's and line are veteran. The receivers are inexperienced so they'll need a confident and effective QB to have the best chance for success.

As interesting as this sounds Ferguson weighs only 170 pounds and is as skinny as a rail. There was great debate over whether Bray could handle the beating that he would eventually take but I don't really see that debate happening here. I know Bray ended up taking the hits for the most part but I think that had a alot to do with how quickly he got the ball out. Id be afraid to march a kid like Ferguson out there at his current weight against the big dogs.

One thing I noticed last night was that Dobbs was the only QB to fake a hand off and ran with the ball... At least he was the only one I noticed....

May not mean anything, but it seemed odd that he was the only one that did it on a called play....

Gives opposing teams this season another wrinkle they have to practice for. GBO! Butch will name starter next Sunday/Monday.

I think they were just showing his read option skills for us. It was a taste of the future. Looked good too especially if you add some vertical to it. The kid has wheels.

Peyton Manning
Of course I was speaking about a veteran not a true freshman although they are somewhat similar scenarios coming off of Shuler. Using that scenario though I think you just made the case why one of the true freshman should start, not the inverse.

Boy if you can move the ball down the field and do well with the twos.

Just think wjat they could do with the ones.

Just throwing a diff perspective out there than what ive been reading lol

I think it's clear that regardless who the starter is, this offense better be able to run the ball very well to score agsinst SEC games. It would be great if our QB didn't have to throw more than 18-20 attempts.

At least one of the other QB's has taken 1st string reps.

I trust Butch. With that said he's kept the door open a long damn time on naming a starter. It's clear to me and I may be in a minority that Worley either can't or won't take the job. None of the others may either and he may start and finish the season by default but at this juncture I think he'll be replaced. I think CBJ is laying the case out now so it's all obvious for when it does happen. I expect Multiple QB's to play those 1st 2 games and I wouldn't bet on Worley being the starter once we hit the SEC portion of the schedule. Time will tell.

Cause Joey Matthews and AJ Suggs had cannons?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

No its because Casey didn't have the strongest arm in the world and still got the job done.Suggs and Matthews probably did have stronger arms.

Butch is going to play whichever QB will win us the most games, this I know. I believe he will stretch out the competition amonst our talented QBs as long as he can, regardless of pressure to "Name a starting QB".

Since when did it become a "controversy"?? We've got 4 great guys fighting for the starting job. Pretty good position to be in I think. Doesn't a controversy usually involve something nefarious or negative? Haven't seen anything like that so far, certainly don't expect to. :hi:

the negative is that they are all hilariously mediocre.
