The Official XXIX Summer Olympics Thread

Kind of like how very few people still remember Greg Louganis. And I have no idea how you can forget him.

People don't even remember who Louganis was even when you spot them his name. If you want to distill the entire history of American Olympics down to what most Americans remember off the top of their heads, it's pretty much America beating the Russians in hockey, Carl Lewis, and Mary Lou Retton. Older folks would probably throw Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill in there too. That's about it.

Maybe I'm wrong; since the 24x7 fellatio of Phelps by NBC has been SO unprecedented, maybe most people will remember his name in a couple of years. But I doubt it.

Phelps deserves it, though. The guy is unbeatable. Total and complete domination of his sport.

And China is faltering on the balance beam. This little girl is nervous as hell.

Americans in contention are always a huge draw. especially in swimming and gymnastics. not really that shocking to me.

It hasn't just been those areas, though. And I'm saying CRUSHED the projections. Just demolishing what we thought would happen.

I just want to say that the ratings for the Olympics are CRUSHING the projections.

I'm not surprised. Besides the Phelpsian orgy, the rivalry with China has given the US a good, hearty antagonist for the first time since the Soviet Union broke up. Americans find the Olympics to be a lot more compelling when they see it as a Good Vs Evil death struggle. We're probably watching events even when the Americans aren't competitive just so that we can root against the Chinese.

this Phelps "fellatio" is no different than Michael Johnson a few years ago and most have already long forgotten him. Phelps will be no different.

Think about it. How many people remember who Dan O'Brien is?

It might help people remember him if I ask who remembers who Dave Johnson is, but I doubt it.
