The Official XXIX Summer Olympics Thread

which is actually why I think you might be in trouble. The 2010 winter games will probably give just enough attention that when added to the world championships he'll probably be in about 13 of 20 given heads. But maybe all my time around sports has disillusioned my brain.

I'm not worried. I'll be asking before the winter games start, so nobody'll be thinking about them yet. I'll be asking people in a bar, early in football season. No freaking way that 10 out of 20 people will come up with a swimmer's name from a couple of years ago.

yeah I think he said there was some sort of an investigation into the whole thing, but they had passports proving their age...issued from a country they are competing for. I think we should do that.

I was mostly trying to make an insulting joke about Karolyi without veering over into outright libel.

There has to be a way to police this, though. As in, the very first time you compete in any kind of a semi-official competition, you have to declare and document your age, and then that's it. That's your age, regardless of what your other documentation says. That way there's an audit trail, etc.

Edit: I'd be able to pick them out if it were pictures from '92 though.

oh, definitely. i could still recognize Dan 1. because i saw him while was watching some of the Olympic qualifiers, and 2. he has that gap in his teeth.

i dunno if i could pick Dave out though, today.

My, there are some beefy young ladies on our softball team. I think it's pretty cool that we found some chicks with actual beer guts to send over there. Makes me like our chances.

When I realized this was an Olympic year, the first name that popped in my head was Phelps from Athens... He was moderately dominant, and won quite a few medals.

THIS time around, he has broken the all-time gold medal record and will likely surpass the record for most golds in one Games. I personally think you're in trouble on that bet Verc... unless you get to pick who you ask. Then it is easy money.

Either way, I doubt you two remember the bet anyway.

as for gymnastics, I feel badly for the US team, but those Chinese girls, regardless of their age just dominated. They put on quite the show.

i think there's a couple of our ladies who will be in the running for the all around title.

We've both got it on our calendars, so we should remember. I even pasted in some of her comments about how stupid I was for making the bet, so I've got good gloating material saved up should I win.

I'll be fair about it. 20 mostly random people; no drunks or big groups. Americans only. But I'm not worried; I've won a decent amount of money wagering on the ignorance of random strangers before. For example, I once won a wager when 8 out of 10 people in a bar couldn't find Iraq on a world map THE WEEK AFTER WE INVADED THEM. No way the average idiot who's drinking a beer watching UGA football will remember "Michael Phelps."

Most everyone calls shenanigans on the two girls for China that are in question... but it seems that the gymnastics ruling body and the IOC aren't interested in REALLY checking into it. My understanding is that last year their papers indicated ages 13 and 14, but this year, they magically turn 16.

I thought some of the judging was questionable, as far as deductions made for comparable mistakes, but it has ALWAYS been that way. China as host got some breaks... but our ladies helped them. If we were flawless there would have been an argument. Since we weren't, it doesn't matter.
