It should have absolutely no impact on the decision-making process by the administration. Those of you that change your positions on whether Pearl should go or not on a game-to-game basis ought to realize what a fickle position that is. My position is that Pearl should be relieved of his duties, and it wouldn't matter if we were 29-0 right now.

The decision is simple, if you believe that Pearl's actions don't warrant firing, then regardless of the results of this season, he absolutely shouldn't be fired. He's earned another year through his results. However, if you believe that his actions do warrant firing, then your position shouldn't change based on a few wins. Go Vols!

good post. the should he stay should he go argument has little to do with wins and losses at this point.

Solid post and one that should be understood by a lot of people on here who change their perception of the program/coaches/players on a game by game basis. This board overreacts to wins/loses way too much.

Guarantee if we had more wins then people would want to keep him.

Good post and I agree. Whether you think he should stay or go shouldn't depend on W's and L's this season.

But I think the other consideration regarding Pearl is that he has lost this team. If you read the comments from players there is some dissention on this team. I have a theory about that and it involves Steven Pearl. It is my opinion that the more talented players riding the bench or getting less time resent the fact that Pearl plays his son in the most important minutes of the game. That takes away
an offensive option and I think players resent that emphatically. Steven plays as hard as he can but he is just not D-1 material so those riding the pine in favor of a son with no talent is where the riff comes in. This will not be solved until SP leaves but I think it has brought the coach's credibility into play. I believe in second chances but I think this situation is outside the second chance, it reminds me of the Clausen/Ainge scenerio which divided the football team and I think Pearl has divided his basketball team because of his son.

Should we take into consideration his recruiting abilities (the way he has prepared us for next season, how quickly he could reload the roster after a year's suspension, etc.)?

I think he should take responsibility for his actions and go. If he stays I believe UT bb will be down for a long time.

He has been an embarrassment since the charges came to light. He lied to the "Enforcement Police" like a little kid with his hand in the cookie jar. You can excuse children for this kind of behavior but not men. They repeated violations after the initial contact, too.

We are the brunt of a lot of well deserved criticism that will have an effect on some future bb candidates and maybe other athletes if the school stands pat on this. I say Fire the whole group at season's end

GO VOLS!!

I have no great insight into bb recruiting but after this mess would top talent come anywhere near Pearl?

Hmmm. Interesting. The OP takes pleasure using his catch phrase of calling people idiots and being clueless. Now he starts a thread calling people out for changing positions on Pearl, while saying he should be relieved of his duties.

Here's his first post from a thread he started a few days ago:

"I've long maintained that if Pearl could get less than 1 year suspension then I wouldn't argue with retaining him."

Nice thread calling out yourself.

So you're saying a person can't look at the punishment for an action to determine whether an action is bad or not?

Bingo. You will get roasted on this because some will argue that Pearl can do no wrong. He has heart! Lol. I for one agree with this post completely.

We have disagreed a lot, but the point I have been trying to say to a lot of people. If you want him gone, then back your reasoning up with sound logic. You do that in saying that you think a coach that has done what he did should be fired no matter if his name is Bruce Pearl or Coach K. I can understand that and respect that.

I hold the position that I am willing to give him a second chance as he has done a lot for this basketball program. However, my viewpoint is contingent on whether or not he actually committed a major violation 4 days after his press conference. If he did, then I feel like we should part ways. But as I heard the day of the letter released and then with Brent confirming that Mike said he thinks it will at the very least be reduced and possibly completely dropped, I will hold that point of view.

However, it is the idiotic posts as you say to one extreme or the other that gets me. We can hire a good basketball coach, people. Bruce Pearl is not God no matter how much you like him as a coach. Also, Bruce Pearl isn't some terrible coach that has gotten lucky his entire career either to those on the other side of the extreme. Stick with reasoning and not extremes. Good post, Law.

I pretty much have the same reasoning about this situation as you. I want to keep Pearl and give him a second chance but if that second violation is true then I'd be leaning toward letting him go. I don't know the seriousness of that violation and if it actually was a violation or not. Right now, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and support him until further details come out.

It will be funny to see how much people will turn to support Pearl if this team should somehow make another deep run in the postseason. We'll see.

This is exactly how I feel.

There's not much I can say to people who are still holding on to the idea that Steven Pearl hurts the team when he's on floor and causes problems with team chemistry over his minutes. I am actually tuning in to watch the games. Anyone pinning the team's problems on SP either isn't watching the games or knows nothing about basketball.

Can't disagree there. I continue to want him to stay for various reasons, but if he resigns or is fired, I understand.
