The Pessimist Thread

I guess I can be both an Optimist and a Pessimist when it comes to UT football and all things involved.

Optimist-CBJ is doing a wonderful job so far. I love the direction things are going and I think it's just a matter of when not if that UT is back competing for SEC titles. Recruiting is going great and seems to be no slowing it down other than the class is about full. I think we will be in a bowl game this year and that goal will be realized.

Pessimist-I tend to try and be as realistic as possible. Some view it as being "negative", but I prefer realistic. "Butch gets whoever he wants", is just not reality to me. There are a lot of very talented kids who want no part of being a Vol and that is just the way it is. Not every 4-5* kid has interest in playing at Tennessee, even if they happen to mention UT on twitter. "They mentioned us so obviously we in it" is just funny to watch unfold at times.

I am very Optimistic that Butch Jones leads Tennessee back to wining. IF he does not and we have a couple more 5 win seasons, I will be in Hart's office asking for him to be canned next. :)

This is where I'm at. :salute:

Outside of the top few guys it is worse than a Dooley class. If this is the class on signing day we are completely screwed. Thankfully, I dont think it will be.

Honestly we may win 4 games this year. Whoever has a decent run game will tear us apart. Depending on the DL, we win from 4 to 6.

I think most actually agree with you in the sense of Butch still has to prove it on the field. I know I do. The term "Butch gets it" is not used in respect to in game coaching though. It has always been used in reference to recruiting. In this sense I have to disagree with you. Butch Jones has in fact proved he knows how to recruit. The talent level he has brought to UT since he's been here is head and shoulders above what it has been in years. He has proven to have an eye for talent. Without knowing all of the other aspects of what is going on with this recruiting class, as far as other recruits go, I really have no problem trusting Butch's decisions as far as taking a recruit. If he says a young man is talented enough to play for him at UT, then I really do not have a problem accepting that.

I don't base that off of looking through orange shaded glasses. I base that off of the trust I have for him in his recruiting abilities. In my eyes, those abilities alone have bought him 2 - 3 more years to turn it around on the field. I HOPE he does it sooner, but realistically two more years is not farfetched.
I agree with most of what you've said, but to say he's proven he has an eye for talent is giving him credit before it's proven. None of the players he actually recruited have had a chance to show if they can make an impact. Not to say I don't expect them to.

You can't be serious. Class is ranked at 6 right now by Rivals. Even a star gazing casual can tell this is a good class on paper now.

I will agree to disagree. I believe he has more than proven he has an eye for talent.

Whether or not the talent pans out is the same problem every school has. We have several Sophmores that will be starting this year, because they proved last year, as Freshmen, that they in fact have the talent that Butch saw in them.

I respect your opinion on it though. I'm sure lots agree with you and you might even be right. I hope I am the one that's right though. :hi:

The question I have to ask, is it that they're that talented, or were we that talented deficient? I think you could argue either way and make valid points.

We were terribly coached for three years before butch came. It takes time to undo that. I think he's got that part done now though. 2013 was for that.

Good God you're negative man. Do you just enjoy thinking like that? I mean US, Arky St, UK, Vandy, Chatt are guaranteed wins. Sheesh.

I agree that you fill needs, but I have a different opinion on what those needs are apparently.

You can build an SEC roster in 1-2 classes, but it's not easy. Saban did it so to say it can't be done is wrong.

Saban didn't walk into a depleted roster, they were a solid team before he got there,CBJ has to rebuild the team from the ground up,to get to a solid SEC Team

as we all know that is going to take several really good recruiting cycles, which i think will take more than 1 or 2 cycles , CBJ seems to be knocking it out of the ball park so far

and No Sabans teams aren't all 5 star players,I'm hoping that CBJ is seeing something in the players he is recruiting or he wouldn't be offering them

As much as I hated Dools and what he did to Tennessee football, not sure I agree that CBJ walked into a team that was not SEC caliber. Dools recruiting classes ranked 5th, 6th, and 5th in the SEC per Rivals. He may have not been able to coach them or control them, but there was some talent signed during those years.

But none of them were here when CBJ came in.

Good point. Could be argued either way.

The exception being IMO Cam Sutton. He's good and he proved it.
