The Playoff Thread

I'm going to disagree. As he hit the bag, Upton rolled and deliberately threw his right arm out into Matsui's legs. I like a good hard slide as much as the next guy, but IMO once you throw an arm out like that you're opening yourself up for the interference call. I'd have no problem with the ump calling it either way.

It's not like it made much of a difference anyway. That game was all Rockies.

You are right in your assessment of the play, but you almost never see that call if the runner gets a piece of the bag. It probably didn't matter in the result, but to basically end the threat of a rally in a playoff game by calling it differently than they do all year is, IMO, wrong.

I am glad the Rockies won, though.

Upton play was a good call, it was deliberate and i'm wondering if it'll carry over in the series' other games.

Also, for any baseball fans who haven't noticed, Jeff Francis has a tendency to be somewhat filthy...

They are classless, plain and simple.

I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with you. why do you say sox fans are classless? i'm confused

Of course it was deliberate; it is deliberate any time a runner makes a hard slide into second trying to break up a double play. But you almost never see it called if the runner gets the bag in the process. Rule 7.09 gives the umpire judgment to make the call, but the judgment almost always goes in favor of the runner unless he has to miss the base in order to take the defender out.

I'm sure it will carry over, but I don't know how serious any retaliation will be. You have to be very careful in doing something that will give the other team an advantage in a short playoff series.

Sorry for blowing off some steam earlier, but i really take issue with the "Classless, plain and simple" remark. Those who make these statements more than likely have never been to the Fens, never spent a game afternoon on Landsdowne or warming a stool at Punter's Pub, or perhaps never been in the New England region.

We call people from MA "Massholes", but that has more to do with their politics and driving ability (or lack thereof).

If it's a reference to "Jeter Sucks" or the like, one must know what it is like in the park in both the Olde Towne and the Bronx when these games are played. Tounge in cheek chants at the expense of a rival and their fanbase, with alot of mutual dislike and respect thrown in.

explain??

--Also, i understand that it is deliberate every time someone slides into second base, but upton was finished with his slide and went up into matsui.. upton killed the rally, not the umpire... didn't a-rod do the same thing in the regular season? jw

Let's see...I grew up in Greenwich, CT. I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to New England.

There's nothing to disagree with. I've rarely met a Sox fan I like...come to think of it, I don't think I know a Sox fan that isn't classless, plain and simple.

So you grew up in Greenwich. Anyone who works for a living rather than going to College on heridity, and doesn't laugh and guffaw about Simon's latest prank down at the Belle Haven Club is "Classless". If you're Greenwich elite, you can call me classless all you want, because YOU, SIR, ARE AN ARISTOCRATIC, NOSE IN THE AIR PIECE OF (EXCREMENT).

Don't give me that crap. The Dropkick Murphys CD you bought, or you J-Boat on the Sound doesn't teach you anything about New England. Greenwich is a part of Westchester County, anyhow, only the Trust Fund Pricks there beg to differ.

Way to prove me wrong.

By the way, I go to UT.

Why would I buy a Dropkick Murphys CD if I am a Yankees fan?

And who looks like the bigger prick- you or me?

Say what you will, i know your Ilk. What others on this board think of me is insignificant, All i know is your high headedness is a product of where you come from, not as a result of anything positive you have ever accomplished. I can sleep at night, you can't, simple as that.

Just because people in Greenwich are wealthy means they can't sleep at night?

BTW, thank you Travis Hafner.

1-0 Injuns

BTW, thank you red sox lineup top to bottom for being up 10-3 currently and knocking sabathia around.

I would've responded earlier but the team i root for is still in the playoffs, playing..

I did feel kinda like the yankees tonight.. I went out and pointlessly spent money and then watched the playoffs on a big screen.

The interesting thing about this D-Backs team is that they seem like they really do believe they are the better team. I've heard several quotes saying that the Rockies aren't out playing them.

It almost sounds like they're saying they know they'll be back next year. And I like that out of this young team.

DBacks just haven't had the clutch hitting they had most of the year, and even their manager said the times when they struggled during the year was when they were playing like this

They definately need to improve their hitting consistency, or find players that can.

Clutch hitting does not exist, as least as far as being a measurable, repeatable skill that predicts future performance. A team that depends as much on clutch hitting as Arizona did this year -- witness their record in one-run games, and the fact that they gave up more runs than they scored -- is in trouble. Sooner or later that luck has to run out.
