The Rap/Hip-Hop thread

I'm a casual fan. ...always aware of Dilla in particular (largely due to the roots).

nice. one of my favorite Dilla beats. i feel like most of the posters on this thread are more mainstream and i can understand why with the whole marketing that goes on in hip hop now. but there is nothing like underground hip hop though.

The only time you will hear an Accordion used in a hip hop song.

I'm not surprised. B.o.B. decided two years ago instead of actually being a decent rapper just to try and be another Drake...except he's not Drake.

This is a bit harsh.

I just think B.o.B gets pulled in a lot of different directions as far as his album content is concerned. He has some good stuff on his album, it just feels scattered.

He has stuff on his two most recent mixtapes that are better than his album stuff, imo. And the B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray mixtape is my favorite rap 'album' of the last five years other than my beautiful dark twisted fantasy.

Gems like this one:

I do think he is an excellent rapper, I just think he needs to find his own direction.

You're seriously not suggesting otherwise are you?

As far as I'm concerned Nas can make a song with anyone he damn well pleases, he's done enough in his career to have that luxury.

She's more of an entertainer than rapper.

She has talent, it comes with a gimmick but being a woman in a man's world, I wouldn't expect any less.

She's calling out people in the crowd in her freestyle.

I have no idea what this means.

But if it means that you think she is all style and flash with no substance, you're wrong. Lil Wayne wasn't scrambling to sign Nicki Minaj because she wore bright clothes. He'd only heard her mixtapes.

I like her as a rapper, and I just like her voice generally.

This is just the intro to Kanye's CD, but it's awesome:

I actually think I prefer Azealia Banks to Nicki Minaj, but both are talented, and to suggest otherwise is to lose all credibility and encourage others to either ignore or openly mock any and all subsequent statements.

...she has talent, but it gets lost in all the theatrical b.s. In reality though, I just don't care for her, Drake or Wayne.

Drake was okay with me till he tried to be like Wayne rapping about catchin bodies and such.

This is the hip hop thread... let's get back on topic.

I have no respect for Lil Wayne, much less his ear for musical talent. If Nicki Minaj is a dumpster fire, Weezy is the Chicago fire.

I don't love Lil Wayne, but I respect him as a lyricist.

What about the eleventeen or so other rappers who bring Minaj in for guest spots on their record? Do you have respect for the talent ear of them? For anybody in the hip hop industry generally?

Do you think Kanye featured her because of her style and flash? Because he was smashing it in the studio? Or because he thought she might sound good on his album?
