The Rap/Hip-Hop thread

OK... you can breathe now. Lord Jamar admits Eminem is better than him... but still not in his top 20.

As someone who was 13 or 14 when 36 Chambers came out and became a loyal fan of anything even remotely associated with Wu (every solo album, Cappadonna, Killaarmy, etc.) I gotta say, Rae is taking himself waaaaay too seriously.

That's not Rae...

Haha, yeah, that was bad on my part, assume I was looking at the second video while I was posting and got it flipped in my head. Regardless, my CD collection can at least validate my economic commitment to all things Wu.

Ghostface and Rae will be in Nashville Tuesday, btw..

Went to a foam party last week. Never heard of the DJ and rapper that performed it. Left trying to find them. The rapping on the songs was average at best to grammy level (from what of it I could hear) but with no consistency at all. The beats however, were absolutely fire regardless of the words over it. Trying to find who they were just to link some of the beats if I can.

It was also a great excuse to see young women dancing and soaking wet, which is always a plus.

So what do you guys think of foreign rap? I've found myself listening to a lot of Spanish and Japanese rap lately, and I actually quite enjoy it. I have nearly a decade of Spanish under my belt between high school and college and it makes it a lot easier to comprehend, but with words ending in only a select few ways, it just makes rhyming so much easier.

Never listened to those, but there's some really good French rap out there too. I'll try and remember some of the names

Listening to a ton of Kendrick Lamar, J Cole and Logic lately.

If you haven't heard of Logic, you need to get on that.

I'm also enjoying watching guys do the "Five Fingers of Death" on Sway in the Morning.

King Los, Brother Ali and Tito Lopez murder it. Logic ain't no joke either.

Logic's Young Sinatra songs from a few years ago are legit. Young Sinatra III was my favorite IIRC

Hard to pick just four. Kayne is superb. Really changed music with his production style. Him + JB had em tryna make the BluePrint II before Hov...

Another 4 would be

Kayne
Pimp C
Ant Banks
DJ Paul

These four are rapper slash producers.

Which leads me back to Marshall.

He may be THE producer/rapper of all time.

Hard to narrow it down...

Eminem is a better rapper than Kanye, but as overall artists I'd say Kanye is in a different category. A lot of people don't like him, but he's the biggest/most impactful musician of the 2000s and I'd say easily so.

From a traditional rap perspective, I agree with GahLee that Kendrick and J. Cole are probably my favorites. I like A$AP Rocky a lot too, and Joey Bada$$ is a lesser-known name worth checking out.

From the newer kind of goofy trap sub-genre that's probably a music snob's nightmare...Fetty Wap is awesome. I like Rae Sremmurd and Rich Homie Quan too. And 2 Chainz has at least one absolutely hilarious line in every song he makes.

I've always thought of it like this. Eminem is light years ahead of Kanye as far as rapping, lyricism, cadence, free styles are concerned. But Kanye is probably light years ahead of anyone currently as far as real producing is concerned, and he's probably one of the greatest producers ever. People don't like him because of his attitude, but as far as music is concerned he is a genius.

People forget Van goh cut off his own ear to send to his wife, Tesla was fully supportive of euthanasia and wiping out half the world, and Betthoven wrote songs about smelling women's farts.

I'm not saying Kanye is on the same level as any of them historically, but for hip hop and production he's pretty damn close. And the closer you get to being a savant or a genius the far worse your mental problems are going to be.

I'd rather have my eyes gouged out than hear anyone in the last paragraph. But to each their own.
