The Reds Thread Part 2: Rally time

I'd love to hear some more from all the folks who thought resigning Arroyo was a good idea.

Oh, come on. There's nothing in Bronson's past to suggest that this abomination of a season was coming. He's cranked out #3 starter numbers like clockwork for years and takes the ball every fifth day, no questions asked. There's value in that, especially when surrounded by a bunch of question marks like Volquez, Wood and Bailey.

That being said, he has blown chunks this season and needs to find his way to the DL with a phantom injury. Bring Volquez back up. Or move LeCure (who has done nothing but pitch well all season, yet is mysteriously overlooked and underrated) to the rotation. To hell with it.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but how can anyone in a position of power within the organization not see that Dusty Baker is the biggest problem?

Couldn't agree more. Today is an excellent example: it was obvious from the first pitch that Bailey had absolutely nothing, yet Dusty leaves him out there to get absolutely pummeled to the tune of 9 earned runs. If Dusty pulls Bailey after letting the first two guys get on base in the 4th, we win today, period.

Miguel freaking Cairo, of all people, went off to the press postgame. "We suck."

Yet, some of us knew resigning him was a mistake of epic proportions and said so. It's not second guessing when you're out front of the issue.

I didn't think it was a horrible idea until I saw the deal. It may be Eric Milton bad.

Also, Bronson has shown plenty in his past to lead one to believe the wheels would fall off eventually. He has always had a rather high HR/9, a pretty average K/BB, and an ERA+ hovering around or dipping below league average for a few years now. Put a fly ball pitcher that is very susceptible to giving up the long ball in GABP, and it is all going to come crumbling down eventually.

I really hope dusty gets the axe before the next game. If it is Joe Morgan, so be it. At this point I don't care who. It would be an upgrade whoever it is. But it would show me that this club has some brass if they got dusty out of there already.

If he can cut down on the errors and start walking a little more, he will become a game changer.

Still just too Dee-Gordon-Ish to me. He's just small and I dunno if he'll ever hit consistently. Only at single A so we'll see.

True True. Still 160 pounds soaking wet, though.

Lotta stuff will happen in the next few days. I'm pumped.

dusty still employed? I was hoping when I got on the net today that there would be good news of his firing.

Bourn would not be a terrible get if the price was right. I would not mind seeing him in center and bunting rather than getting k'd every at bat.

in my opinion that is all jock is going to do is talk.
You've made this clear. No need to keep saying it.

Clubs that have spoken to the Reds report they're so discouraged by their four-game sweep by the Mets -- at home -- that they're strongly mulling a sell-a-thon, not a shopping spree. That might not apply to a player such as Jimenez, who is signed and under control through 2013. But if it's true, it's not a good development for a Rockies team that appeared to have targeted the Reds as a potentially perfect fit.

One easy move: Jocketty should be able to procure a good prospect by finding a new home for veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez, who is having a productive year and is due only $1 million for the remainder of the season.

And maybe it’s time to trade Stubbs in order to acquire a true leadoff man like Houston’s Michael Bourn, who won’t become a free agent until after next season.

As extreme as this may sound, Jocketty might be wise to see if there’s any interest in a Cueto blockbuster. Like Jimenez, he has an affordable long-term contract. If Jimenez and Tampa Bay’s James Shields stay put, maybe Jocketty could stun everyone in baseball by exacting a big prospect bounty from the Yankees.

That’s highly unlikely. It would be very un-Castellini-like to take that sort of approach. But the Reds need to be creative and introspective right now. They are following one outstanding year with a disappointing one. It’s time for them to figure out which one is closer to their true identity.
