The Review from Section Q

I'd give it a C, partly because AP is awful and partly because we couldn't score in the second half. By the time our 2nd and 3rd teamers get in, we may be on the AP level of talent, although not in experience.

Depth is our biggest issue and Worley's lack of timing is a concern considering Peterman looked awful.
Doubt Worsley would have faired much better with the 2nd team. Absolute bullcrap that Peterman didnt get at least one series with the ones.

Definitely room for improvement. But, there's quite a few things to be pleased about.

It is the first week, and even some of the supposedly better teams are not looking as good as their rankings (e.g., Texas finally moving ahead just before the half against the worst team in the WAC).

I expect CBJ to highlight the positives, address the issues head on in practice and have the team well prepared for next week's game.

I know it's AP, but getting a shutout has to give some confidence to the defense after last year. Worley's inaccurate throws are troublesome. That won't get it done against Sec teams. Depth is an issue, but we knew that coming in. Overall, a solid performance tonight.

This. tonight we saw what kind of team we have. Next Saturday we will find out what kind of coach we have

Running game looked good.

We should have looked good. Running it down the throats of a bad FCS team is what any team can do with better athletes. I wanted to see timing routes and chemistry between QBs and receivers which didn't happen. Also, AP is so bad that besides the interception, the defense was unchallenged the whole game. We need a LOT of work just for next week, let alone the rest of the season. This game showed our desperate lack of depth.

Only on Volnation can our fans give a B+...B-...or C grade for our team having 0 penalties, 0 injuries, and 0 points from the opposing team. Pitiful, guys! Regardless of the opponent, this was an A performance from this team and our new staff!!! GBO!

I think that's a little unfair to Peterman. He wasn't exactly blessed with talent around him and the playbook went from barely open to completely shut when he got in there.

Our depth is rough though. And our corners were lost in space a lot.

It appeared the simple things such as hustle, discipline, tackling (for the most part), conditioning have been addressed and we are definitely improving compared to the last few years. Everyone looked lean and in shape. But the talent isn't back in Knoxville just yet and 7 wins will be a really good first season. I'd also like to see what Ferguson/Dobbs could do because Worleys arm strength is lacking. He managed the game well but some of those throws were just turribully late and off target. Overall, we won and that's wha counts! I love this time of year!

As far as Peterman's struggles are concerned playing with the backup OL did him no favors he didn't have enough time to properly assess his game. Worley's passes weren't very crisp and were low at times and behind the recievers consistently. All in all hopefully a lot of these issues were based on first game jitters but we will learn a lot from next week's game because Western Kentucky is looking like a tough game.

Maybe, or maybe it's jones' fault for not letting him gain some confidence If he is capable.

Either way, neither of the Qbs looked good with that offense. In fact, the reads were downright awful

Worley will be fine...he is running his kind of offense and it showed with how well he did with the fake handoffs...fooled the announcers and cameramen and AP at least twice...has decent enough speed to get it done...played smart.

Also, his timing was off but if everyone would step back and think for a moment, he only had one whole week where he wasn't sharing first team duties with another QB...it will get better...he has a quick release and a strong enough arm to compete...and he didn't get rattled when the pressure got to him.

I am actually a little more at ease after watching him play...with that said we are still looking at 7-5 at best 8-4.

Gavol, 2nd response to your comment about the play book. Why is it barely open and completely shut? Tennessee is holding back for what reason? So we can compete against Oregon or hang with Florida? Sorry, Tennessee will not compete with those teams because the play book wasn't exposed, it will be because of toughness, breaks go their way, you know, Neylands Maxims. Part of the grade I gave is because I think butch missed an opportunity to get these guys experience in his overall system. I hope this doesn't come across poorly because I like what jones has done so far.

1. No penalties, no penalties, NO PENALTIES. Not even from the backups. Great discipline.

2. Worley's throws were often behind. That's not gonna work against most opponents. There were a few balls that still should have been caught.

3. The running game was excellent. Summerhill had some nice runs in the 4th quarter.

4. The secondary is worrying. Wasn't that impressed. Depth is an issue on both sides of the ball.

5. I love the shutout. Tackling could have been a little better.

Overall: B+

Some of Worley's throws leave me scratching my head - many behind the receiver and arm strength is average.

But watching other games today, it is painfully obvious that team speed will be an issue against against most of or opponents - the Vols are still lacking in that department.

everyone cheering that Bray left for the NFL are going to look very very stupid this year...Worely isn't even half the QB or talent that Bray was...

It's been said time and time again; Bray is NOT fit for this offense. The right choice was made, all around.
