The Runner's thread

6 last night at 8 flat pace. Gives me 70.6 for the month and I am hoping to get another 6 on Saturday so that will give the most miles I have ran in a month. That I can remember anyways.

Anybody ever gotten a black toe nail from running? I have gotten black toe nails from dropping stuff on my toes before but just within the last week and half or so I got my first black toe nail from running. I have no idea what caused it.

Not from road running. I got it many times playing basketball. A hard stop would sometimes jam my foot forward with enough force to push the big toenail back, shearing it's bond to the toe. Figured out finally to keep my toenail clipped as short as possible.

I keep my toe nails short. I cant stand for them to be very long at all.

I have read were people who run a lot get them from time to time. I just haven't ever had it happen from running.

Six today. Felt like I was moving in slow motion the whole distance. Ended up with 8:00 average pace. It was a struggle. This run gives me 76.7 for the month.

I get them occasionally with longer distance running. Almost always the second toe.

18.12 today in 2:53.

3 with hills last night. I struggled last night but legged it out. The hills are getting easier. I think I struggled because we hiked a little bit on Sunday.

so I'm having no troubles out of my left leg (the one I injured 10 months ago) but my right leg seems to still be overcompensating. Yesterday was so bad that my right calf literally almost totally seized up just a mile into my run. I walked/lightly jogged back and foam rolled, lacross ball rolled, took glutamine and a naproxen. Been stretching it a lot and it's getting better, but while it's never been this bad before, it's definitely an issue I've had for a few weeks now. As mentioned, it mostly seems my right leg is still overcompensating from my injury. And tips or ideas to remedy this situation?

Is your left leg still weak? Have you been doing any weight training?

I do calf raises and other leg workouts. It's not as strong as the right for sure. Are you hinting that this could be the issue?

That's my first thought. It may not be where it needs to be and that's causing your right leg to compensate for it. Just my first thought.

both. When I do alternating though, I do the same amount on each leg. Any ideas for strengthening both legs out to be even?

I think I'm just going to call my physical therapist again, but they don't give me any suggestions without going through another evaluation. Blah.

Hmm... I would think if one leg was weaker you wouldn't be able to do the same weight or same number of reps.

If you are able to do the same weight and same reps I don't think I have any ideas for making sure both are the same strength.

I do the same number of reps, but I would say it is easier on the right side. Perhaps I just need to do them more often and focus a little more on the left?

Personally I would try some one legged calf raises on the left side holding some free weights. See what happens from there.

On longer runs, blood doesn't flow as well to the outer extremities so it isn't rare for nails to turn black/blue and fall off as they become oxygen deficient. I haven't lost any nails on my longer runs (Half marathon/training and Bourbon Chase/training) despite--or maybe due to-- the fact that I have pretty bad circulation to my outer extremities anyways.

It's completely normal and nothing to worry about.
