Cam Tatum, like the rest of our wings, is an utterly awful passer. You can't count on him to make a competent entry pass. It's just an example of poor offensive coaching. The key to the zone with Pearl was having someone like Prince or Tyler Smith who we could utilize in the middle.
They were guarding Tatum tonight from 3. If we swing the ball to Tatum, bring Harris to the ball-side elbow, we could have entered the ball the entire night and beat the zone. That's middle school level zone offense that we couldn't quite master.
So... Going forward, how best can this team attack the zone? Who has to step up?
I'm impressed by the precision. One kid slightly messing up would make a wreck of the whole thing.
Actually running an offense against the zone would be helpful. Passing the ball around the outside of the zone and cranking up a three is not a zone offense.
That's why I prefer to run a motion offense because you can still run it against a zone. You can still use ball screens against a zone (watch UK and Nova to name two), penetrate gaps and be aggressive instead slowing down and passing around the perimeter. Another easy way to attack the zone is to push the ball in transition before the zone can get set.
bottom line is: you have to move - men and the ball. You either have wings / point who can get in the paint or you flash 4 and 5 to spots to penetrate. It's not magic. Our standing around waiting approach has been proven a failure for about the past 75 years.
