1. I loved the old school intros again tonight. Alas, I'm sure that'll be the last time we see them this year.
2. It didn't get much buildup, but there won't be many better matchups this year than Tobias Harris v. Kyle Weems. It's fun to watch two guys who really understand the game go at it.
3. Officials who can't administer the mechanics of the game have no business working at the D-I. The botched substitution with Missouri State shooting free throws at 44-42 is inexcusable.
4. Along those lines, calling a technical foul on an assistant coach without first issuing a warning is high school stuff. If your skin is that thin, go ref CYO ball.
5. That game illustrated the improvement Bruce Pearl has made as a coach. Tennessee loses that game two years ago.
6. If you like freewheeling, up and down basketball, this isn't the team for you. It's going to be 47 painful feet at a time offensively all year.
7. I liked Hopson's aggressiveness tonight. If he brings that effort every night, Tennessee becomes a much better team immediatey.
8. Trae Golden is going to be a stellar point guard by the time he's done in Knoxville. His poise is something you can't coach.
9. That was an NCAA Tournament quality game. The experience will serve both teams well going forward.
10. Excellent win for Tennessee against a legit opponent. They certainly earned their trip to The World's Most Famous Arena.

Well, I need our defense was good except for the last 30 seconds, but I didn't know if hat meant any in-game situations or what not.

#5...how so?
Without the emphasis that has been placed on halfcourt defense the last season and a half, they get beaten going away tonight. They won the game because they defended hard possession by possession. That almost never happened in Pearl's first four seasons. To draw an NBA analogy, Tennessee has moved from looking like Don Nelson is in charge to one that resembles one run by Mike Fratello(Cleveland Version).

It was good to see actual plays down the stretch for Tobias. Where is that the first 35 minutes?

Hat, do you think Tobias is a one and done type player or do you think he should stick around a few years.

Agree about most all of it, but hopefully Goins is back for the New York trip or it could get ugly. I also thought McBee did okay trying to penetrate, but he gets stuck and just doesn't know what to do with the ball.

This game reminded me of the years I spent watching a young Gregg Marshall coach to 50-48 scores consistently.

I see your point.

By the way, Golden looks like a heck of a player. And Kenny Hall needs more minutes.

My opinion (in only 3 games):

In terms of his basketball ability, he's as polished as you'll get for a freshman. The problem is, he isn't exactly the biggest guy in the world (6'8, 220) that plays the 4, and he isn't THAT athletic. Here's the thing. I saw Perry Jones play yesterday. Dude's got uber-athleticism/height. However, he's not near Tobias in terms of basketball savvy. But Perry is a top 5 pick.

He's not the kind of explosive guy you usually see leave after a year. Somebody would draft him in the first round, but I'll be a little surprised if he's not here two years.

Would make him a ton more money if he can develop a more consistent 3 ball, and a pull up 15ft.

Edit: Also be able to show he can defend perimeter guys.

There were stretches of the game that were totally brutal. If you like offensive beauty this wasn't your game. Still, it was a good win.

Heard that Missouri State executed their gameplan very well for the most part.

Checking the stats, the three point shooting percentages were, well, awful. Tennessee was 4-14, and Missouri State was 4-22.

Does Mo. State always jack up that many threes, is my question?

Agree with everything, Hat, except no. 7.

Hopson gets out of control with his ball handling and decisions when he is too agressive. He needs to stick with his strengths(mid range) and stop driving uncontrolled to the basket with no plan.

That game will serve us well. Winning a game against a solid team that made us play slower than we wanted will give us a little more confidence in being able to execute in the halfcourt.

agreed. He is not a lottery pick. He will be a solid NBA team player, not someone to build your franchise around.

Hat, I know Renaldo played awful last night, but from what I saw tonight he looked decent. He was hustling, not forcing shots, grabbing rebounds, and his effort on defense was not his usual lackluster, out-of-place stuff. I think if he can play that way all year he could help this team out. Yes, no?
