Hopson is actually better than Tatum.

Hopson's turnovers come at more crucial points. For example, his turnover on the pick and roll to Hall helped continue a 8-0 run in the second half. And then he throws the ball away right at the end of the game.

Gerald Boudreaux, Teddy V, and Doug Sirmons all look great compared to these group of refs.

And yet again Tennessee still has one of the worst student sections.

I was hoping it improved some from last year. The two games I went to the student section was laughable.

Could you describe the old school intros? I wasn't at the game and the video feed of the scoreboard along with the play-by-play call of the game wasn't up and running on the UT website until several minutes into the game.

Agreed! He is turning it over way too much to be a "team leader".

So are Goins and Harris.

Everyone's turning it over too much right now. I'm actually not all that worried about it...most of it is just guys trying to do a little too much.

You guys know why, right? That a-hole in the top hat and cape sucks to the max. He has no sense of when it's the correct time to get the students loud. I try get the students loud every game by standing and cheering and imploring everyone else too, but no one ever seems to care to do it when we really need it. Just because that guy dresses like a doucher, and for some corrupt reason he can still sit in the student section even though he's not one anymore, people think he knows what's best. Seriously, next time you guys are at the game, watch him to see what he does when we start blowing a lead. He only tries to get the students loud when we go up by 10, or during time-outs; NOT when we really need it, like when it's a 2 point game!

Finally, phowell, I agree in that the student section sucks, mostly because of top hat, but I bet you don't do anything better except when Steven Pearl tells you to get on your feet.

Without the emphasis that has been placed on halfcourt defense the last season and a half, they get beaten going away tonight. They won the game because they defended hard possession by possession. That almost never happened in Pearl's first four seasons. To draw an NBA analogy, Tennessee has moved from looking like Don Nelson is in charge to one that resembles one run by Mike Fratello(Cleveland Version).

I wish Pearl knew how to draw up plays like Fratello.

They simply announced the players' name. No video, no pyro.

In the second game tonight, Belmont is up 33-10 with 6:21 to go in the first half. Brady's crew looks like they'd rather be elsewhere.

If Brady can't do better than this at Arkansas St., he doesn't have a long future as a head coach. They are very athletic, but Belmont is extremely well coached and plays with great intensity. I love the double down on the post every time Ark. State tries to go inside that has completely shut down their inside game. Obviously, they aren't going to win too many games with their outside shooting.

Thanks Hat. Nice post again. Not a bunch of long-winded, “Look at me I can write a college essay” gabble. Direct to the point. Nice perceptive point on how Pearl’s defensive coaching ability has grown.

I agree completely, but I sure wish his half-court offense coaching would also grow. We are painful in the half-court most of the time.

It's still early; we will show improvement as the season progresses especially with all of the new and young faces. Remember UAB in football.

To me it seems we pass, shoot, and dribble like we are trying to make every play an ESPN top 10 highlight or an AND1 mixtape, and instead it looks more like what I see at my stepdaughter's elementary ballgames. I think a few practices focusing on fundamental elements such as dribbling, passing, setting picks, etc could go a long way.

On a side note, I couldn't help but chuckle when Stephen Pearl montioned for the guy to wipe up a spot on the floor and the dude threw the towel at him and gave him a look like "you clean it up !?@#" and stood watching.

I saw that too, it was hilarious. He did a great job though. Maybe he found his calling.

3. Officials who can't administer the mechanics of the game have no business working at the D-I. The botched substitution with Missouri State shooting free throws at 44-42 is inexcusable.

I'm not trying to defend the officials because I thought officiating was terrible in the past 2 games especially in game 1 of the tourney. I was just wondering what you all thought of this play. When I watched it I thought wtf, does ted valentine have 3 sons?

It was such an odd thing to see something like that at the d-1 level, the more I think about it I'm not so sure the officials messed up on this. The foul was called on the floor and the reason they went to the line is because it was a 1 and 1 situation. Subs come in before the first shot in 1 and 1 situations and wait until after the 1st when there is 2 ft's. If there was an error it was that the sub came in after the ft shooter had recieved the ball from the official and honestly I think the clock keeper blew the horn late for the sub to come in. Still yet the player has to wait for the top official to wave him in even if they blow the horn.

Thoughts...

My opinion (in only 3 games):

In terms of his basketball ability, he's as polished as you'll get for a freshman. The problem is, he isn't exactly the biggest guy in the world (6'8, 220) that plays the 4, and he isn't THAT athletic. Here's the thing. I saw Perry Jones play yesterday. Dude's got uber-athleticism/height. However, he's not near Tobias in terms of basketball savvy. But Perry is a top 5 pick.
I think the problem that Tobias will run into at the next level is that he is a tweener between the 3 and the 4. I think he'd play at the 3 at the NBA level. He's not a slasher type but he has a good looking jumpshot and is a very solid ball handler. Granted he is only three games in but I think he would definitely be a 1st rounder after this season but if he stays another year he could be a lottery pick. With that said, there are 30 or so games this season and my first opinion of him could be way off.

Spot-on assessment.
