The Section 103 Postgame Report

I was watching on TV. The game was so bad, that I started watching the Preds play. I am over Pearl. I have defended him for a long time. However, for a top 10 or so team, we should blow out the likes of ETSU. Im tired of the "high athletic ability-low IQ" players that we keep getting.

JP Prince needs to be benched for good. Woolridge is terrible. Again, zero halfcourt offense.

Thanks for the excellent analogy Hat. I was busy tonight and appreciate it. I wonder sometimes about next year and how Brian Williams will fare. I surely hope he comes into his game this season and stays there once and for all.

He hit 3 3's. Obviously they were passing him the ball because spotting up is the only way he is scoring. If they aren't passing him the ball, maybe it's because they are tired from covering for him on the defensive end. There were a few times when his guy dribbled by him before he ever moved his feet. If you notice, when his guy gets the ball the next closest defender shades over a little to "help".

Very insightful. Totally agree and not everyone sees that. I believe he is getting more comfortable on the offensive side and flow. When he released his shot a couple of times I knew it was going in when it left his hand.

He must get his feet moving more on D - and a little less arm flailing. One huge improvement was he had his hair cut a little so he was doing far less of the flip. I think this improved his performance as well. He seldom turns it over and distributes the ball pretty well. Guarding SEC guards - I don't know. Hopefully his d improves as the season progresses. The rest of his game already shows improvement in my opinion.

Hat, I've felt Tatum has played pretty well and consistent so far this season. What are your thoughts on him?

Not Hat- but I will weigh in. Tatum leads the team in fg percentage. He has a smooth shot and is athletically gifted. I think there are times when he gets a little lost/ not sure what to do/ whether to take a shot / where his man is, etc. If he could get more consistent he could definately help. He also needs to improve his ball handling.

I think ETSU is decent and UT has some glaring weaknesses.

Probably the worse I have seen us play in 3 or 4 years. Raced out to a 12 pt lead shooting 75% moving the ball, moving people and then played like crap the rest of the game. ETSU had a couple of nice players but that was it. What about the stretch just before half when we had Woolridge, JP, Goins, and I can't remember who else on the court at the same time for about 5 minutes when we didn't score. Bruce has to leave at least 2 or 3 guys who can actually score on the floor at all times or it will be disasterous. Played poorly in the half court offense and played poorly on defense. Special teams played well though. Punt and kickoff coverage was outstanding.

I've seen plenty of haltime shows over the years. Some good, some bad. UT has a special talent for picking the most idiotic acts possible. They should have the breakdancers team with the Simon Says assclown from last year and set a world record for suckitude.

This is what I was waiting for... UT's selection of halftime performances is abysmal. And throwing in 4 and 5 year old's doesn't help.

Skylar McBee = UT's version of Cameron Mills. Good stroke. Pretty shot. But he's a liability otherwise, and that will be exposed further against higher-level opposition. That being said, having a guy that can come off the bench and knock down a couple of 3s at an opportune time is an asset, to be sure.

I'm starting to think that Maze, Tatum and Hopson are going to have to play 32+ minutes a game. There's just too much off a drop-off when Woolridge, Goins and J.P. hit the floor.

Maze 0-4 from the 3pt line sucks...Williams misses more layups than any other 6'10 270lb guy I have ever seen. Hopson 2-8 from 3pt line isn't going to help in sec play.

I think this team is just lazy and doesn't want it bad enough.

I'm pretty sure that Bone will take McBee's spot. He's a good three-point shooter, and a way better defender than McBee.

If McBee and B Williams are on the floor when J Wall has the ball, he will be able to start his dunk before they realize he went by them.

ETSU is not a bad team by any means. This win was a good one. Our team does seem to lack the killer instinct to play tough D when we are up 20, but so does almost all of the teams in D 1. Vanderbilt almost gave it all back against a good Missouri team who has a quick guard who did not give up.

This was not a good win. Beating them by about 25 and not looking incredibly lackadaisical would have been a good win. We were 20-25 pts better than them talent wise.

I would blame the lackadaisical play on finals, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that is not on the forefront of their minds.

Hopson is shooting 63% from 3PT. I think he will be OK.

Yes, this.

Watching UT mosey around in confusion and indifference during their offensive possessions against ETSU's 2-3 zone was sickening.

I'm not sure what was more frustrating: five or six mid to late second half possessions where we stood around for 32 seconds and then fired up an off-balanced fadeaway that never had a chance, or J.P.'s multiple attempts to finish the alley-oop when he could've just came down with the ball and powered up for an easy layup. You put kids on the bench after bonehead decisions like that.

"Hopson is shooting 63% from 3PT. I think he will be OK."

I will show you where that fact is misleading!!!!!!!

In a close one against a good Depaul team he was 0-4
Loss to a good Purdue team 0-2
Against what I think was a decent ETSU team 2-8

sure he wore out ECU and went 3-3 against CofC....against teams that have good guards he has been non-existent

So he is shooting 14% against our quality opponents so far

Yep, if Scotty plays a guard that plays halfway competent, hard-nosed defense, his game goes in the toilet.

Yea, but to say that going 1-4 in one game is not a good sign for SEC play is just dumb.

He shot 36% last year, and it is obvious he has improved this year, so it is safe to say he will be OK shooting wise in SEC play.

Anyone get to hear Pearl's radio interview around 11:00 AM yesterday on 99.1?

He went on and on about how Lofton and Hopson are comparable stat wise through their first two years of college. He talked about how Lofton was the underdog that no one expected anything from, and that's why everyone loved him and cheered his success. He compared that to Scotty's situation saying that everyone expects Loftonesque performances from Hopson, and when he has a bad game we're critical instead of supportive. Then he compared it to him opening up his own burger joint in the city that surprisingly ended up having the best burger in town that everyone came to love. After three years of that burger being in existence, people came to expect the burger to be great instead of appreciating how good the burger was compared to other places in town. He then got philosophical and started talking about how that plays into human nature and UT fan's perception of Hopson, and said he will be a NBA player in a couple years.

His point might have been lost in stories of delicious burgers, but in the end he was making the point to ease up on ole' Scotty because he's doing well in retrospect.

I found story time interesting. Thoughts?

He is not the player every one expected despite his enormous talent level. He will have to toughen up and be more physical to be an NBA player or a great college player. Interesting that Pearl indicated he would be in the NBA in a couple of years.

That lecture is perfectly in line with Pearl's "nobody loves me" attitude anytime someone criticizes him. He expects the fanbase to mindlessly accept whatever is put on the floor simply because it's better than Wade Houston's efforts.

Almost anything would be better than Houston's efforts. I was somewhat disappointed that he did not express dissatification with our effort last night. I saw no intensity and half-hearted effort. Half-court offense continues to leave much to be desired. Every one should play a zone and slow it down against us---we will always struggle.
