The shut down thread

Sen. Doug Jones introduces Back Pay Fairness Act to reimburse fed workers with interest

“If the federal government can charge you interest for being late on your taxes, then it should be paying interest on late paychecks,” said Senator Doug Jones, who has also requested his paycheck be withheld until federal workers receive their back pay. “The more than 5,500 federal workers in Alabama didn’t ask for a shutdown and shouldn’t be punished for it. It’s only fair that the government pays them back with interest for putting them out of work indefinitely or forcing them to work without pay.”

Think about this: Is a national emergency something you can plan to declare 3 weeks down the road... or is it something that must be dealt with in the moment, requiring immediate attention? It is ridiculous for Trump to suggest that we are in the throes of a national emergency but he can wait 3 weeks to take action against it.

Sure you can. If there’s an issue that needs resolving and others can help rectify the situation then give them time to do so. If they refuse and you have the power to fix it then you do so and let it be known about those that failed to act.

Nancy is a self described "master legislator". It was a masterful job declaring that she was not going to budge one bit on the border debate and she didn't. She has 3 weeks to decide to do something and actually negotiate or continue to be an idiot and ignore the wants of over half of the country.
In my opinion, if she decides to not negotiate over the next 3 weeks, if I was Trump, I would veto every bill that came across my desk for the next 2 years.
Agree... she just gave Trump an ass whipping, but that will not last... there are serious issues at play here, and ignoring border security will not stand. Dims look to be organized and got his attention, as well, they can enjoy this one for a bit. Makes me want to punch Ryan in the nads about his pitiful performance when he had the power.... too much of a RINO.

That doesn't describe an emergency. If your house is on fire and you call 911, is the operator going to tell you "Well, that really sucks man... I'll give you half an hour to put it out by yourself, if you can't handle it by then, I'll send a fire truck." Of course not. An emergency, by definition, requires urgent intervention.

It’s been an emergency for decades. You can play irrelevant analogies all day but it still is what it is.

The Dems have seemed to think the wall was a great idea in the past. What’s changed?

Swastikas were commonly used in various cultures and innocuous until they became the symbol of Nazi Germany. Not as drastic with the wall, but the symbolic transformation is something similar to that.

Trump never believed in needing a wall, it was just some red meat that his campaign had calculated would drum up a base. You know, like the investigators in Hawaii discovering some "unbelieveable things" about Obama’s birth certificate. Those guys must have been down there a year going through a filing cabinet.

Again, the dems have went on long speeches about needing to do something about illegal immigration and voted for a wall/barrier in the past. What changed? “Cause Trump” isn’t an acceptable answer.

1) Trump politicized the issue during his campaign and he framed it with a lie (Mexico is paying for the wall).

2) Trump has made the issue more about xenophobia than about national security by fear mongering and scapegoating. There have been lies from the Trump administration that terrorists are crossing the southern border en masse, with no evidence to support that. They also have claimed that these migrants are carrying diseases - once again, without providing evidence.

Thank you for the history lesson that everyone already knew..

Bs answers are, bs...

I gave you the basis of the Democratic opposition. Trump made the wall symbolically important. This was about symbolism. Added bonus was that no one really thought it would have been money well spent. Most thought additional barriers in some areas would help, but that the money would be better spent on other border security technology.

Border security, yeah a combination of things, but with Trump wanting to make his rhetoric manifest into reality without any real details attached,.. why would anyone in Congress go along with that?

Again, in the most simple why I know how to ask this. Why did the dems flip flop on the issue? If your answer is simple “muh Trump” just say it. No need to add all the other bs.

Basically, yes... but it's important to point out what it is about Trump that is so offensive to their senses. It's not his spray tan. Throughout the 2016 campaign, he made a promise that he knew he couldn't fulfill (Mexico paying for the wall) and he embellished the case for the wall by denigrating the migrants themselves through fear mongering. It was all done in the name of pandering to the far right.

Did anyone know what $5.7 billion was supposed to build? As far as I could tell, it was a number someone picked out of thin air.

I don't think the whole party flip flopped on anything as you claim. A few maybe. Sure it has always been discussed and even agreed to in exchange for something. Parts of the wall have been approved by d's and r's in the past and will be in the future in the areas where the need is greatest. But you have completely lost sight of the goal of border security when you place a glorious wall at the top of your priority list.
