The shut down thread

While it’s a bit far fetched it’s highly believable based on the persons involved.

Not so far fetched if el Chapo believed the polls and thought Hiliary had the election all wrapped up. It would have given her more freedom to consider his plight. Of course, since we are talking a Dim, it wouldn't be collusion ... just every day politics.

Right now recycling/scrap prices are down so that affects Chinese surplus and steel mfg. since a considerable amount of our scrap is shipped to their steel yards. They're not buying as much material as they were previously and their lead times on raw material are extended as of now. Better to invest with domestic material from vendors here. With that the R's can win support on both fronts, the wall is in the process of being built and they're using American steel mills to supply the material.

Have to keep the unions out of it, so they don't put themselves out of business ... again.

LOL. Congress doesn't get paid until they come up with a compromise/bill??? Not a ****ing chance in hell that has any legs. They get theirs.

According to congressional net worths and their salaries, they'd never miss their salary; it's a pittance compared to the graft they receive.

So you believe "investing" taxpayer dollars in US Steel companies is a smarter play than just buying cheaper steel to begin with? That seems great for these private companies, but aren't you going to get 'more' wall built for your buck by purchasing Chinese steel?

Backfire Economics: Double-digit increases in US steel prices to the highest in the world are crippling US manufacturers

Wouldn't it be nice if they simply shipped back F.O.B the 9/11 Trade Center steel we dumped on them?

Do you prefer quality over quantity or just purchase material in bulk and hope a percentage of the material purchased will pass specifications? For instance, whether you're purchasing 4140 or 4340 or raw castings, the differences between US products and the Chinese can be extreme. Some can be due to casting flaws, material irregularities or mill incompetence.

Yeah, so we're talking about a barrier. Surgical grade steel isn't necessarily required. I'd have thought that the red hats would have wanted to maximize the return on the investment given the difficulty of procuring the funds to buy it.

Guess not.

Yeah. So we're talking about money. Maybe we can just print some more?

Or we could buy more steel from the Chinese at a lower price and build a longer barrier.

Shame about those pesky tariffs...

we see this all the time in finished products too, in the built world. We always make sure to throw in a couple extra ASTMs we know Chinese products can't meet.

I generally compare it to cheaper/crappier/and usually more unhealthy versions of IKEA.

one case in particular the GC had to get completely new gyp for a whole project because there were heavy metals in the Chinese stuff. no idea why heavy metals would be anywhere near a gyp producer.
