The shut down thread

I would think most our border and customs agents take their job seriously. This is not a Cheech and Chong movie.

If you have limited resources and you are looking here, then you aren't looking there. Play the game, let them make some nice catches at the crossings, and move most of the stuff elsewhere ... takes the heat off. Like in football run to set up the pass or vice versa.

I hope Trump says "I really don't want to build a wall. A wall will be a waste of money. Congress shouldn't spend a dime on border protection." at the SOTU next week.

Democrats would be tripping over themselves to find money to pay for it.

Didn’t say that they did not take their jobs seriousl, that’s what they get a few luck large busts a year. Maybe less than .00001% of what comes in gets seized at the border.

Actually if you read the document, it's a pretty pitiful excuse for what it must have cost in manhours to develop. In fact, it sounds like a wimpy corporate mission statement used as an excuse to pay out bonuses, meet a requirement, and create a worthless bureaucratic coven to accomplish nothing substantial. There's nothing in there that really addresses implementation or any fixes to barriers ... either physical or by other methods of enforcement. There's the usual drivel about prevention and treatment options, and some blather about working with other governments to stop the production and exportation of drugs (like that's never been done before). This is a prime example of why the shutdown wasn't some kind of disastrous event ... simply too many worthless paper pushers who never get their hands dirty or have any field experience. This is probably the same basic boilerplate garbage in the same document produced every year.

Interdicting the Flow of Drugs Across the Physical Borders and into the United States

Along with the new challenge of drug trafficking via internet sales and mail and express consignment delivery, drugs continue to flow across our land borders and through the maritime and air routes. Stopping these flows must remain part of our comprehensive interdiction efforts. The historically high levels of cocaine production in Colombia, along with heroin and methamphetamine production in Mexico, combined with the vast number of routes and conveyances into the United States, make the challenge of combating drug trafficking across our physical borders no less daunting than it has been for the past several decades. Federal agencies should expand efforts in the detection and monitoring of the air and maritime approaches to the United States; the detection of illicit drugs and precursor chemicals being shipped in commercial containers; and interdiction of plant-based drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and marijuana, as well as synthetic drugs and their precursor chemicals, along the Nation’s land borders. Moreover, this increased effort must be complemented by increased effort and cooperation from foreign partners who can contribute vital information on trafficking patterns and assets to seize drugs bound for the United States

Yeah, I know and I thought about making that point but passed. My meaning was that the physical volume was actually very small and could easily be transported by alternate means.
How many of those drug lords are going to risk million dollars worth of product on the back of an illegal border jumper?

They'd have been better off doing so this time. Wouldn't you guess they have those guys on a pretty tight leash? You could also make the same argument about putting all the eggs in one basket and a truck driver.

And again, that was put in that truck so it WOULD get caught. The cartels know they can't put that kind of amount of any drug in a truck coming through scanners, dogs, and personnel.

They put them inside cans of a legitimate products buried like a needle in a haystack in a packed full truck.. Scanners can't see anything, dogs can't smell anything unless they unpack the whole truck and randomly open things. They know that 99‰ will get through.

I think you guys are trying to hard to insist that the main supply of drugs are in backpacks, or turbo dune buggies etc.

I completely agree. There's nothing like a con game to keep someone looking one way when the real thing is happening elsewhere. I saw a video of a couple of guys shinnying up one of the steel plate fences - just a few seconds carrying a pack, a really bad design. They turned around when they realized a photographer was there recording everything on camera. Yes, it's an example of how a poorly designed fence doesn't work, but also an excellent example of how easily a half dozen guys could have had this load over the border in minutes.
