The shut down thread

That's the spirit:

I could be wrong, but I'm getting the feeling that maybe Trump isn't the bee's knees at convincing people to do/support something that they weren't already inclined to do.

Oh noooos a photo op. That means he will be the first POTUS ever to do one. His Presidency is over.

You're not wrong. I believe Trump is really out of options, not that he ever had any. His speech didn't move anyone and If he tries the national emergency rout he may get laughed out of office.

He could probably salvage a win if he announced he would sign the pending bill and form a bipartisan committee to study and make recommendations on border security.

Edit: Oh yeah, and let this stupid wall idea slip into oblivion.
Really? You already called over 300 million people and asked them if they were moved?

I think the Democrats would do better to lay out something more concrete (pun intended) when talking about border security.

Right now the debate is wall versus "something else", and I think the no wall case would be stronger if Democrats talked more specifically about fencing/tech/screening at crossings, etc.

What difference does any change at legitimate border crossings make if someone can just walk across unimpeded elsewhere. That's kinda like making sure your windows are down and locked when you have no walls. What difference does non-lethal technology make when someone is detected crossing but cannot be apprehended (or better simply turned back) before they are gone? How is a wall more expensive in the long run than having a ton of crossing guards to ensure rapid response? Of course, none of those issues are relevant because the "we were for it before we were against it" Dims have no intention of doing anything useful ... simple obstruct and delay.

Most of us were, and then the GOP came along with the 27 dwarves, and the Dims put Hiliarly in the lineup. Sometimes it's all about the least of the evils.

Trump was hardly the least of the evils, he was just the one who insulted and lied his way to the hearts and minds of the people who are most impressed with carnival barkers. Hillary is trash, no doubt - but she didn't vote in the GOP primaries.

I guess the proof will be in the pudding when the peoples' representatives are harangued by their constituents into capitulating tomorrow.

It was evident that no one but Trump could beat Hiliarly, so I guess you might call him the nuclear option. Most of the GOP candidates made Romney look good, and that's really pathetic. To me the real question is whether the candidates are so bad because the electorate is brain dead, or whether the god awful collection of candidates over the years has turned the electorate into zombies.

He said exactly the same things he's been saying since the shutdown started. Including calling it a crisis. Of course it's going too be hard to justify that it is a crisis when border crossings are at a 40 year low.

Border-crossing arrests are at historic lows — but Trump is still bemoaning a 'drastic surge' in illegal immigration

This is his Alamo, he's digging in here as any compromise will signal weakness - a consequence he is too thin-skinned to face. He's terrified of being portrayed as feckless, his bravado and machismo is the only facade he has left to maintain since he's been exposed as being a worthless leader. He'll fight and insult his way to the grave, dance with who brung ya.
