The shut down thread

What do you consider “assimilated”?

It's a very subjective concept, but I would say it's some combination of contributing (typically work) and attempting to observe the staples of cultural norms and etiquette. Americans tip, so if you're trying to assimilate, then tip. That sort of thing. I don't think it means that a 60 year old maid needs to learn English. Who cares?

We just have to disagree here. When I have customers or potential customers walk in to the company I work for and I greet them and they look at me like I am out of place then yes I do have a problem with that.

Why not embrace the country they have come to and embrace our culture and our language?

What are you talking about exactly?

This is where your argument goes off the rails, you're attempting to apply your subjective moral authority to what you personally believe as a matter of public policy.

Ironic that you hold this position and then proceed to trample others moral beliefs that a wall is wrong.

I think this is referred to as cognitive dissonance.
not to derail this thread, but its funny that murder becomes subjective when one side likes it.....

I don't know of any civilized society or group that "likes" murder, can you elaborate with the understanding that the term "murder" indicates an unlawful act?

When I or no one here can speak Spanish they just have a blank stare and try to speak to us in Spanish. And some of them even own their own business. The burden should be on them to learn my language

But why is this such a bother to you?....if they're not in the US, then you don't get their business. If they're in the US but your business doesn't accommodate them, then you're no better or worse off. I'm not understanding why it hurts you so much?

someone dies and its not because of self defense or even negligence, its always premeditated, and there is a victim. sounds like a pretty open and shut case to me.

It doesn't "hurt me" I just don't see why one would leave such a crappy place but yet want to keep everything about that place in a different country. If I move to Germany I can't expect everyone to cater to me and speak English

If you don’t want to do business with non-English speakers then put a sign up. Problem solved.

Trump is the salesman, he needs Chuck and Nancy to capitulate the coffers. Your analogy is flawed, if the car salesman walks out - deal is over. This isn't a monarchy, yet Trump is treating it like one.

None of his supporters have acknowledged that the people's representatives have said no and passed a resolution with full GOP support. Time to come to terms with that reality.

He is treating it like a monarchy. The likes of Trump is precisely what the Founding Fathers were worried about when framing our Constitution.

Are you aware that humans are able to think critically (some of us) and have mastered the used of tools? This ill-advised meme would make much more sense if there was a single documented case of an alpaca, giraffe or hippopotamus constructing a ladder to escape their habitat.

Open and shut? Too bad you weren't in that Texas court room dropping truth bombs like this when Roe v Wade was decided.

That's the part of this I've never understood. A lot of the same people who think that "you need to speak English in the United States" is racist, prejudiced, or unfair would have no problem with a French person saying "you need to speak French in France." Is that French person also racist?

It would be dumb of me to walk around France, Germany, Italy, or any other non-English speaking country, especially if I moved to and was living there, and expected or demanded everyone to speak English. Why is it racist, insensitive, or too much to ask that if you're going to live in the United States, you probably need to speak English for your own good?

I'm not talking about mandating English or anything like that. As Huff suggested a 60-year-old hotel maid probably doesn't need to know much English. But if I moved to Germany, I wouldn't expect my neighbors to learn English, start drinking sweet tea, and become college football fans. I would be a minority in the prevailing culture, and I would try to assimilate into it. I'd still like all those aforementioned things, but I'd also participate in the prevailing cultural norms where I lived.

Typical mindset of a McDonald's employee. How do they say Big Mac in spanish?

Agree 100%. Only in America do we have a group that think it's racist for people to learn our language. But that's also the same people that want completely open borders

a wall doesn't deter anyone unless it is guarded. heck if you were ever a teen you have probably hopped a fence or two in your life time. and this has a much better reward on the other side.

Scaling a 30 foot wall isn't anything like climbing over a 4-6 ft chain link fence.

More nonsense and delusion.

How many humans would die daily as a direct result of a wall?

How many humans die daily as a direct result of abortion?

Your programming is proving to be quite extensive.

That's fine. Is anyone arguing anything different than this?

No one is saying Americans must learn Spanish to make immigrants feel at home.
