THE SKY IS NOT FALLING

I agree, although a very important aspect.

It is commonly said recruiting is the life blood of college football programs.
And yet there are programs which recruit great but do very little wrt championships. There are teams which go all in on recruiting and implode in a year.

I said this in a recruiting thread and caught flack, but I'll say it here since this thread topic is more appropriate for it:

I am glad we made the playoffs, and that should always be the goal for this program every year.

However, making the playoffs this year isn't the signifier of a program on the rise that it would've been a year ago, or for the past decade.

All it says is we're a top 15 program, which we were in 2022. IMO the 2022 team was better than this one, and would win by 14+ head to head, but didn't make the playoffs because it wasn't a top 4 team.

We are in a good place, don't get me wrong, but citing that "we made the playoffs" this year as a sign that we've taken a step forward is a bit misleading considering that the playoff field has expanded by 3x in a single off-season.

Also true.

But the teams that do win championships year after year are at the top of the ladder in recruiting year after year.

Michigan last year is the closest thing to an outlier but they also have had pretty highly rated classes, probably cheated, and had covid rules give them a chance to build an unusually experienced roster last season.

And even now they're getting into the mix for top classes this year with NIL.

From 2010-2020, Dooley, Jones and Pruitt coached the Vols. If my math is correct, in 11 seasons, they only won 65 games. Look at what Heupel has done during the time he has been the coach. Am I disappointed from the last game? Absolutely. But when I compared CJH to those other bozos, for me, I am good. I am almost 70. There was a period when I was wondering if Tennessee football would be relevant again in my lifetime.

I think there can be a balance of questioning Heupel's ability to go higher than he has this year and 2022 while also acknowledging that he is a good coach who has been great here and we need to stick with him for the foreseeable future to see if he can get over the hump.

3-5 years from now, if we max out as a first round knock out or miss playoffs several times, we can maybe start other types of discussions.

Considering where we've been before he came here, Heuepel needs to be here.

Every year 9 of the top 10 programs ranked by recruiting composite do not win championships.
TOSU, the team which just spanked us, is the poster child for it.

I think Saban's success has gotten everyone thinking what he did is the norm as long as recruiting is strong.

So is CRB a failure because he hardly ever gets past the sweet 16?

Of course the sky isn't falling

But the concern some fans have are we've flown as high as we possibly can in it with Heupel driving the ship

Valid concern, but one that I'll really worry about if this continues to be where we max out the next 3-5 years
I don’t think you’ll have to wait that long. Next year will likely reveal where the program is headed.

Correct, but it's worth noting that it's usually the teams that finish in the top 5 year after year who end up winning it.

Top 10 in the country is 7th in the SEC

This year we finished 11, or 8th in the SEC.

That is middle of the pack for the conference.

Always replacing suggests replacing after one or two seasons.

Banks has been here four years and has been a weak link
We have a QB problem. The RS Freshman needs to process faster to allow us to go faster.

When we slow down, the defense can get lined up correctly, they get tonread our formation, makes our offense stagnant.

Even with Hooker, we would slow down in the red zone and struggle. Nico currently is not capable of going fast, but this was his first year starting. We will see if he get better next year.

But yet we finished 1 game out of winning the conference

Dooley and jones were terrible coaches. Heupel isn’t, that comparison doesn’t work. Fulmer being stubborn about replacing assistants and playing underclassmen was a part of his downfall
Right CJH isn't a bad coach, he doesn't need to replace all the coaches like people here are saying. We don't have a coach problem, we have a QB problem

Doesn’t need to replace them all but a few yes. Also Nico had a good redshirt freshman season considering he ran for his life a lot and our receivers were awful at getting open

Recruiting is one of many factors for a healthy program.
