The Soccer Thread

Not really. I mean when they took a couple NFL teams over there they sold the thing out. Bring a couple pro soccer (I actually laugh when I type pro soccer) teams over hear for a game and see how it sells. Oh wait! They have tried that and it doesnt work.

Also, the NFL is already in the biggest market. Soccer is the one sucking hind tit.

Well NFL Europa certainly fared well. Great point.

I'll not argue if it was WC or not or a play in game what ever the hell y'all do. But it was during the WC time frame and there were foreigners in town wearing their Soccer crap and telling all of us dumb Americans how we should like soccer (kinda like some of you here). The only difference is I don't have to look at your messed up teeth like I did those Euro trash punks when they spouted the "good" of the hobby known as soccer.

Seems pretty hypocritical.

We used to play flag ball in jr high and at church camp. I will admit that I was flagged more than once for let's just say a little to much contact. :)

Judging from the quality of tackling on the Hill lately, you'd probably be flagged in a UT practice, as well.

Happens in pretty much all the youth baseball leagues these days.

it also happens in most youth basketball leagues these days. Even reffed one basketball league where in the 5-6 division both teams scored each time either team scored.

Ha ha ha, there's a huge difference between the World Cup and any other soccer game ever held in the U.S. What you said's the equivalent of going from "I saw a half empty Super Bowl" to "ohh wait, it was a half empty NAIA regular season game."

easy reffing gig when no one cares who wins.

The little tikes always played the first two games, then the 7-8 and 9-10 year olds played and it was more serious. For the little tikes, I was basically a coach on the floor. I've thought about it and I don't think I called one single foul in those games. Only called balls out of bounds and absolutely blatant travels and double dribbles. If they were trying to dribble, we let it slide. It was cool to see how much they improved from the beginning of the season to the end. Of course that happened with all age groups.

first two games are on ESPN classic, which isn't part of Comcast's extended basic in my area. Oh well, I'll have to wait til Sunday for the matches on ESPN2.

the germany v. poland game is just starting, this seems like a pretty big rivalry and should be a good game. my favorites, the dutch, play tommorrow, i've liked them ever since the '94 world cup. i was 9 or 10 at the time, and i remember liking them because they were the same colors as the vols

Always been a big game. Huge Germany fan considering my mom and wife are German. So, up 1-0 at the moment.

germany looked pretty good today. tommorrow should be very interesting, group c is far and away the toughest group in the tournament.

The US-Argentina friendly last night drew 80,000 to Giants stadium. Decent match, but no goals.

The Dutch are spanking the Italians right now. I can't believe their first goal wasn't negated because Van Nistelrooy was offsides.

It was almost 3-0 at the half, but the Italian keeper got just enough of the shot to deflect it over the net.

wow, the Italians can't buy a goal and the Dutch are like men among boys. 3-0 with 10 minutes left.

I don't understand the rule about that...the Italian player was laying out of bounds, no fault of the Dutch, so if he can come inbounds at anytime he chooses, why can he stay out so that it's an offsides? Hell, his own keeper threw him out.

i know that i'm a little biased, cause like i said the dutch are my favorite team in the tournament, but all these people that complain about soccer being slow and boring and that teams just sit on leads and don't try to score should have watched that game today, that's the way soccer ought to be played

Italy got hammered, but they aren't out yet. I would like to see Romania or Italy advance, at the expense of France... Italy has Romania next.

Portugal is the first team in. Ronaldo had a goal and two assists. The host Switzerland is the first team out. Turkey hit the winner in the 92nd minute of the game to eliminate the Swiss.

Today Germany has Croatia and Austria hosts Poland.
