The Soccer Thread

don't forget about the U.S., even though they usually suck, every now and then the pop and play a few good games, they tied argentina a couple weeks ago. people have been saying for years that the u.s is eventually going to catch up to the rest of the world, but at this point, as Dennis Green would say, "They are who we thought the were" which is just a mediocre team soccer nation. this is kind of difficult to understand because we obviously have athletes on par with the rest of the world. maybe if they would go out and hire one of these foriegn coaches, that knows about winning on an international level we could get better

It isn't just about the coaches, although I would have loved if we got Jurgen Klinsman. The MLS isn't great for preparing players for international play. We have more people playing overseas, which is great. The most important thing is we need better athletes playing soccer. Every relevant soccer country except the US has their top athletes playing the worlds game. Soccer is growing though. The US should host the world cup in 2018 or 2022, and that should help. The fan suppot should be good.

the MLS is occasionally on espn, and i've found it to be pretty unwatchable compared to the EPL. almost all the top players for the US play on lower level EPL clubs or on clubs in other European nations anyways, so it's difficult for them to get enough exposure to generate fan support given that almost no European soccer comes on TV here. ESPN has Champions League on, but VERY few if any American players are playing for clubs that qualify for Champions League

wow, what a win by Turkey. I think they got lucky on one goal when they weren't called offsides, but they definitely played to win after going down 2-0.

btw, Turkey's keeper drew a red card, does that mean he's done for the rest of Euro 2008 or just their next match?

To finalize group A, Switzerland got one for the home crowd. 2-0 over Portugal. Portugal probably will get Germany in the quarterfinals.

Turkey beat Switzerland in an outstanding game. 3-2 the final score. Turkey plays Croatia in the second round. The Turks will be without their starting goalie who got a stupid red card at the end.

I missed the game, what did the turkish goalie do to get a red card? I'm pretty sure that was the first red card of the whole tournament.

No, Schweinsteiger from Germany got one the other day against Croatia. The Turkish goalie pushed a player down in the stoppage time. Stupid decision by both of those players.

yeah, but it's Barbados. That's like the Patriots playing the Eagles of Carson-Newman.

Germany and Croatia win. Kind of sucks for Portugal that they get Germany, but the Croatians have played well. Should be two exciting quarterfinal games.

Germany aren't playing their best... I was really hoping Austria could pull it off yesterday, being one of the hosts and all...

No one is playing better than the Dutch. Those guys are on fire. Some great teams headed into the quarters. Portugal, Spain, Netherlands... should be fun to watch.

Italy moves on. France played them pretty tight even though they were a man down. Henry must be sick to his stomach over his toe putting the game out of reach.

I would say the Turks are playing better than anybody, at least in the final 15 minutes of their matches.

Did Doug Dickey consult on the Dutch uniforms?

I'll be watching wearing my German jersey. Portugal has to be the favorite though. Germany will be missing a couple players.

It was a good game. Didn't expect Germans to dominate the first half. Slimy Portuguese came back though. Good game.
