The Stark Truth

I haven't looked at his stats in awhile but I remember thinking Jackson was overrated. I'm not sure what else he did then those three homers with the Yanks.

Stark's point, which I agree with, is that Reggie was overrated as a DH. He was very productive in his time as an outfielder. He was the primary run producer on 5 World Championship teams. That's pretty impressive.

He seems like a better version of Roger Maris.

It is amazing how many guys in baseball hang on for so long with several subpar seasons to finish their careers.

Couple interesting things of note -- Older players from the "golden era" of baseball are on the list for overrated, while the underrated players tend to be more recent. I think media surrounding baseball tends to be blinded by the history into undervaluing the present. Hence the values of historical importance of the game today frequently being lost on the public.

And on Goose Gossage - IMO So many people talk about how underrated he is that he's not really underrated anymore. I know about the HOF junk, though, but still.

Overrated is probably the wrong word, but I think he definitely gets a little too much press at times because he is a Yankee.

I would say that Smoltz could also be an underrated reliever as well.

Are there really people that underrate Yogi Berra and Gary Carter?

Stark's point, which I think is 100% accurate, is that people overlook what a great player Berra was and simply focus on the funny quips. I think Carter is the second most overrated catcher of all time.

Ray Fosse before the Rose incident didn't get the props he deserved.

Does anyone really overrate CJ, or for that matter Benito Santiago?

I do. He was essentially a .500 pitcher. His strikeouts and longevity mask the fact that his more important numbers weren't anything special.

I've been saying this for a long time. Great pitcher, no doubt. But his blazing fastball and no-hitters made him larger than life, where there are probably many other pitchers (Bob Gibson, for one) who are much better but don't get the same recognition.

Underrated: Phil Niekro - Winning 300 games playing predominantly with the Atlanta Braves of the 70s and 80s is an amazing feat.

Good call, GA. Also fielded the position well and could hit.

Also love the fact that Smoltz is on the underrated list. Couldn't agree more. The guy is money, esp. in the postseason. But pitching on a staff with guys named Glavine and Maddux will cause you to be overshadowed somewhat.

Would anyone consider Jeter overrated?

You know, I hate the Yankees (always have), and we do hear a ton about Jeter. But when you watch him and check out his stats, the guy delivers, year in and year out. There's not a team in baseball who wouldn't love to have a bunch of Derek Jeters playing for them.

Relief Pitchers:

Overrated:
1. Lee Smith

I have one of the world's most obscure pieces of sports memorabilia: a baseball signed by not only Lee Smith, but his then Cards teammate and Chattanooga native Lee Gutterman. My dad yelled "Lee Gutterman" for about 10 min, during batting practice at Fulton County Stadium, and eventually he and Smith walked over, and Gutterman was nice enough to humor my father by acting like he remembered him from high school.

Santiago was viewed as a freak of nature back in the late 80s when he was playing for the Padres and throwing out would be base stealers from his knees. That rep probably lasted a few years beyond his prime.

Helton may have BEEN underrated, but that's no longer the case. He's now just overpaid.
