The Supreme Court of the United States Thread

If charities and community programs were enough, the federal government would never have become involved.
I'm all for people doing what is right and needed on a local level so well that government has absolutely no reason to play any role at all.
If only we could do better on the local level.....

Is that why the federal government becomes involved?

Interesting. Tell me more. Why did food stamps become a thing in this country?

America's churches are too busy building palaces of excess.

Continue. Was it a failure of charities and communities or something else that lead to it?
It was a combination. Charities and communities were not sufficiently getting food into the hands of the hungry and needy, and charities and communities were doing nothing to help farmers economically move their surplus to areas where the food was needed.
A prime example of where the needs of one community can be met by the needs of another community in a mutually beneficial way - but neither of the two communities have the skill or ability to do it on their own.

That’s not what happened at all. Charities and communities did a ton to help farmers. Famously communities would refuse to bid at farm auctions on the foreclosures allowing farmers to buy back their own land extremely cheap.

Why was the food too expensive to begin with? Obviously if the food were expensive at the beginning of the Great Depression you wouldn’t have specifically mentioned the impact on farmers. Because the truth is food was extremely cheap during the Great Depression.

So what caused the price of food to rise and lead to the creation of food stamps?

Could FDR’s policy of paying farmers to destroy livestock and not plant fields in order to raise prices have had something to do with it?

He was trying to find the most beneficial balance. The food stamp program certainly helped with the balance.

It’s the most beneficial balance that one that produces food at the lowest cost allowing us to feed the masses more effectively?

You know, the thing the market was doing

Lol that’s what we call balance? Now you’re just trolling 100%
It's precisely what we call balance.
On the one hand you have people in need of food, on the other you have farmers with to much food. What's the proper balance. How can you go about feeding those in need while making sure the farmers are able to make a decent wage?

Not necessarily, It seemed to have resulted in a lot of people going hungry and many farmers struggling to make a living wage.

He created the people in need of food by paying farmers to burn food and leave fields unplanted.

How can you feed those in need by destroying food?

Farmers were unable to make a decent wage because there were too many farmers. The solution is allowing them to move into other industries. Not paying people to not farm.

The ability to produce food cheaply is the literal basis of all civilization.

Except it didn’t. Cheap food doesn’t cause people to go hungry. Artificially increasing the price of food does

You get the government out of the equation and let the market balance itself.

He did not create the people in need, that's absurd.

You feed those in need by making food available to them and giving them a means by which to take advantage of the availability.

No one stopped them from moving into other industries but we were trying to come out of the great depression.

When you burn food and pay farmers not to produce food, yes, you 100% create people in need of food

It was “the Great Depression” because of his policies.

What? The Great Depression started in '29. Sort of hard to blame that on FDR.
