The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

So you believe I control who my coworkers are and their beliefs on this? You assume all of my friends have the same views as me on everything? Lol not even close. Don't make assumptions so much. Makes you look stupid.

No I assume that most people's daily interactions is with people of similar ethnic and economic worlds. Not that they all agree with you. Not that they are all white or black. We all look for confirmation bias. Myself included. What you should do is not act offended or whatever until you understand their perspective. You have players in the NFL whose grandparents lived prior to the civil rights act. You think their world view hasn't helped shape the players? Did your grandparents world view shape yours at all? Hell I have read for several days people post about the vets in their family. You don't think the current black player in the NFL, who had relatives fight in these same wars, who had different rights look side eye at it? Of course they do.

The protest isn't about that. It's about perceived police injustice. But maybe, just maybe, they don't view the flag or anthem the same as you. Perhaps it's bc they had relatives sent to kill the Nazis and came back not being equal. Or the Koreans. Or hell Vietnam. That damn war started in 1955.

I do understand and support a push for racial equality. But I have beliefs and my own perspective. And in my belief, during our nations anthem is not the time or place. It should be respected. Kneel together 30 minutes prior to the game or something, that's great. Not during the anthem. As I've said, just because I disagree with kneeling during the anthem doesnt mean I don't understand. I also am allowed to have my beliefs just like you are and they are.

I understand your point. And as I said, I understand others and their family members down the line had different experiences. But I love this country and believe the protest should be done another way. Not kneeling during the anthem. I support racial equality, but not protesting by kneeling during the anthem. I cannot support that. That's just my opinion on it.

Fair enough

Ratings were up 6% over last year. That's a win. We will see if it holds. Does make me wonder about all those on here who claimed to be done.

Oh, but this little thing....

Ratings for the game rose 63% above the week three game from 2016, according to ESPN, though that game suffered from being in direct competition with a presidential debate.

Only reason was because it was up against a presidential debate.

Ratings are down

No, its a strategy, he uses the same strategy over and over. The owners are going to have to come up with a fix, or it probably won't get better. The players allowed the owners to use them as a pawn.

The ACA is irrelevant, that collapses on its own, as it was incredible stupid to start with. Nobody wants to own the next failure, as that will not work either.

Somewhat agree about the ACA. Doesn't need to be repealed, just one slight adjustment. Remove the tax penalty associated with it and it will implode quickly.

You don't have to support their right, you probably should recognize their ability to carry on with their liberty without interference. Saying you have to "support" means a person has to do something. For the record, I do not believe people have to stand for the anthem, generally, but that doesn't mean there isn't consequences for not doing it, especially if you have contract or you are getting handouts, like say how the NFL gets handouts. And just because I don't believe a person owes anything to this country, I further believe that assuming someone else is going to defend you is not a guarantee.

These are the finer points that are lost on some, maybe I am taking this the wrong way.

Just a bit. I don't have to assume advocacy for a neo-Nazi's viewpoint, but I do have to support their right to advocate whatever squalid views they hold. Supporting free speech is a not a passive act, especially when the views in question are aberrant.

It is government's core responsibility to protect those rights against other citizens. When it fails to do so, as it has routinely done for years on campuses, citizens should take an active role in the defense of rights. We have a long history of forcing government to execute its sworn duty.

Yeah that would speed it up, but sounds like the premiums are going up drastically, no surprise there. Lol

Man, these NFL owners are probably looking for a way to get out of Dodge this weekend. This is crazy.
