Fed is playing pretty well. Don't see any more majors in him, but I don't think he can be just an afterthought at this one. Could make some noise..

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer when it comes to Fed but he always looks good against mediocre guys. I don't fully understand it. Carlos Berlocq might give Rafa a reasonable competitive match. Fed will just beat the tar out of a guy like that. But then the conclusion that would seem to flow therefrom unquestionably does not flow therefrom as we know that if/when they play, Nadal will give Fed his proper whuppins per usual.

But I'm starting to wonder if they will play. John Isner is playing some inspired tennis. Could he really beat Rafa in a five set outdoor match given how good Rafa is playing? I mean, I doubt it, but I'm sure he can give him a heck of a match.

Oh, and Sock has a very winnable match in the next round. Tipsarevic has not been playing great tennis at all. It's been a down year for him, and he's very beatable.

Good points, all. I really don't think Fed has it in him to get past Nadal at this point, but who knows??

Isner could beat Nadal but will not at this US Open. It would take a perfect match from Isner. That is just too much to ask.

It would require no drops of the Isner serve and for Isner to actually cash in when given break points on Nadal's serve. Isner's m.o. is getting to and winning tie-breakers. However, I like Nadal's chances in a tie-breaker versus anyone. Nadal never loses tie-breakers when it counts.

It will be interesting to see if Isner uses the U.S. crowd's cheering for Monfils as motivation going forward. If he develops a 'FU' attitude, it might just work to his advantage. I'd hate to face his serve if he was in a bad mood.

Here is what I think of the bottom half of the draw and the Nadal, Isner, Federer interplay.

1. If Nadal and Federer meet in the quarters, Nadal will win.

2. If Federer instead meets John Isner in the quarters, Federer will win.

3. There is no guarantee that Isner will beat Kohlschreiber, but I tend to think he will. I'll give him a 60% chance.

4. If Ivan Dodig beats Rafael Nadal in the next round, I will dress up in drag, sing Carly Rae Jepson, capture it all on video, upload it to youtube, and then post in this thread for all to enjoy.

5. Rafa has been blowing through his opponents. I tend to think he'll beat Dodig in straight sets, and will thus go into the Round of 16 match in great shape physically.

6. If Isner beats Kohlschreiber, but Kohlschreiber pushes him to five sets in a very physical match, that's good news for Nadal and bad news for Isner. Like Dyron said, Isner needs to play a perfect match to beat Nadal, and in order for him to play that perfect match he needs to come in fresh and energized.

7. All of that being said, I am going to be very interested in the Isner/Nadal match if they do end up playing.

8. The winner will DEFINITELY be playing Federer in the quarters. Fed will torch Mannarino in about an hour and half, and won't spend much longer in the next match dispatching Robredo.

9. Let's go Rafa.

10. Vamos!

I agree with all of this, although I'm not sure which of Isner breaking a service game or winning a breaker is more likely. All i know is breakers are almost sure to happen in that matchup.

I LOL'd at number 4 - that is, until I saw D's post about Dodig having beaten him which made me LOL more. No worries, Kid - you might make a fine looking woman :)

Something is wrong in the world of tennis when Hewitt takes Delpo to five sets. Told my wife before this started that this should be a three set match. Wrong assessment...

DelPo just hasn't looked himself all year. He played a heckuva match against Djoker at Wimbledon, but just does not look like the same player. Not sure what is going on with him.

Well, I guess we can stop speculating about the possibility of Isner getting past Nadal..

This little hottie could be the real deal on the women's side. Don't think anyone's gonna wanna see her in their draw in the future.

Holy smokes, we are of the same mind! I think I'm in love. I cannot believe how hard she was hitting the ball and she would hit even harder on the biggest points. She is awesome.

She is super hot, and I think she just moved into the 90's so we may see a lot more of her on tour.

Well, there goes Fed. When you squander breaks to the tune of 2-16, that tends to happen. Hate to see that. He really didn't play very well.

Federer has no pop on his shot right now. Hasn't all year since the AO. He just presses too hard when he isn't able to move the ball through the court. Robredo basically kept the ball in play tonight and let Federer implode.

Well, yeah that was exactly it. Fed was way off his game and the balls were flying on him. But they flew on him because he made them do so. It was an off night. He has played pretty well coming into the tourney, but laid an egg tonight.

The German giving Nadal a bit of trouble, but Rafa will get through it, I think. Raonic, whom I've had diminishing hopes for, is trying to lose to Gasquet.

This is exactly what happened. He didn't do anything special. Federer played so stupid. Coming on weak approach shots. Going for winners when he's completely out of position. He's in his own head.

Kohlschreiber is a tough customer, but once Rafa won that second set, I knew he had him.
