The (Unofficial) U.S. Open Thread

My phone died yesterday, or I would have commented. Excellent final. Good for Murray. I wasn't sure who I was rooting for either, but I'm glad the Brit got him one. He had to earn it. Djoke didn't give it to him.

I would put that match up there with some of the all-time great finals, but I don't think I can. Blame it on the wind. It made for a lot of unforced errors. The rally's were epic just like the Aussie Open final, but the Aussie Open final was just a more cleanly played match.

But for drama, this one delivered.

I think Andy gets him one more major. Wimbledon.

Oh god, I just realized there are no more grand slams until the end of January.

I"m gonna be so excited to see Nadal back on a tennis court in the Aussie Open. I'm gonna change my sleep cycle in advance just to keep up with it.

I, too, am glad that Novak decided to get mad and fight back in the final three sets.

Although wind certainly (and Murray's consistent, boring ground game) was the biggest factor that worked against Djokovic, I could sense clearly that Novak was beyond nervous in the first and second sets. At one point near the end of the second set, Djoker went almost exclusively to a putrid slice backhand. He was simply trying to survive and get the ball back in play. Murray's nerves took him over in the third set and he was pushing his forehands back over the net as well.

Us weekend warriors have all been there, especially if you play the occasional tournament.

The point being that even at the highest level, these guys are still human and nerves get the best of them. It was remarkable to see. Once Djoker got mad at himself, he started hitting out on the ball and got himself back in a position to win.

Congrats to Murray. He can now focus on being a tennis player and not the "best player never to win a major."

All Hail Ivan Lendl.
