I guess Z is busy tonight...

1. A win is a win. This was the type of game we couldn't afford to lose and we didn't, so that's a plus.

2. Jarnell Stokes looked more like the Stokes we all expected. He was able to stay out of foul trouble and put up 17pts & 18rbd. 7-8 from the free throw line was a welcoming sight from him.

3. Speaking of free throws, after an abysmal performance from the line against Xavier we shot 80% for the game going. 29-36.

4. Our three point shooting once again was very good, we only took 13 shots from deep which is a good sign we were attacking. We hit 5-13 on the game from deep.

5. Our turnovers were an awesome sign, 5 on the game. I missed what the year was, but they said post game it's been a few years since we had that few of turnovers in a game. Maymon was the big difference, 5 last game just 1 tonight.

6. Speaking of Maymon he looked much better than he did against Xavier. My hope is that was just rust and he's continuing to knock it off. I'll gladly take the 15pts & 11rbd he put up tonight.

7. Our defense in the 1st half was again very poor, and that's putting it nicely. We allowed Xavier to shoot 48% on the game and USC-Upstate 60% in the first half. We seemed to right the ship in the second half holding them to 26% in the second half and 0% from three. That will be something to watch going forward.

8. Our rebounding is a concern. Stokes and Maymon were monsters tonight, but someone else is gonna have to help. Xavier out rebounded us, and for most of the game Upstate was as well, but we pulled ahead late in that category. For a team that was supposed to be one of the best rebounding teams in the country we're gonna have to improve.

9. For the second game in a row we started poorly. You can attribute it to tempo, substitution, offensive knowledge of our system or anything you want. IMO we need to trim our rotation now, and not wait until conference play. It's clear who our best players are, this is too important of a year, ride your studs as long as you can.

10. Feels good to get our first win on the year. The next 3 games are all games we will likely be favored in, and then either Iowa or a rematch with Iowa will await. This team still has a lot to improve on, but I've seen positive signs. IMO defense is a lot easier for us to fix than offense.

BONUS:

11. The ZJC Player of the Game:
Jarnell Stokes: After what would be described as a nightmarish opening game he responded in a big way tonight. 36 minutes 17pts 18rbd and 7-8ft, all that in front of a couple scouts from NBA teams, congrats big guy. The scary part is it could've easily been 30/20, he was 5/17 and missed a lot of bunnies, clean those up and stay out of foul trouble and he may actually live up to everyone's expectations.

I knew there was a reason I thought stokes showed terrible offensive skill tonight.

5-17

Yea I thought of you when I saw that, speaks to what you were saying. Still though we scored 17 points on his 17 attempts, that's a good number.

The game would have been put away easily if we make the gimme baskets. I like the second half defensive adjustments but concerned with the slow start. Long season to go but I'm encouraged.

Message to team. Make lay ups. They are easy. Make them.

Improvement - FT's. Made them.

Rebounds - Not buying it yet. We played a lower level opponent. Team rebounding is not good.

It's a W. Next.

You guys understand this was Upstate right?! You are talking like we accomplished all this against a ranked team. If we weren't doing this at the min, we have no business being on the court. This was a marginal performance at best. Long season and could get ugly

We looked much better in the second half. I can't believe we came out so flat. Stokes needs to finish around the rim and quit putting the ball on the floor in the paint. Would like to see McRae get more chances to create.

Apologize for the random thoughts. Hiked all day and I'm beat!

@Vol_Hoops: With 5 turnovers, the #Vols had their fewest in a game since Dec. 20, 1990, when UT had only 5 miscues at New Mexico.

I was there too, you must live further than I do lol. My apologies, hadn't seen you post all night thought you may be busy.

No problem! It's a 40 minute drive for me. Plus I didn't want to do it on my phone.

You've got to understand that this is college basketball. Playing a close game with a team of perceived quality as low as USC Upstate isn't that big of a deal. MSU beat UK then struggled against Columbia. Wichita State struggled against Tennessee State. North Carolina barely survived Holy Cross! The gap between good teams and "bad" teams isn't very large.

A win is a win. I'll take it.

We think USC Upstate is a decent team.

At the end of the day we should be 2-0 but it's early and I still love the make up of this team. They'll get it clicking and we'll be fine

Our guys need to get more physical as big as we are we should be dominating the paint. Its to early to tell but as of right now it don't look like we will be dancing this yr. Hopefully we start picking it up as the season goes on if we don't Conzo has got to go.

Great rebounding numbers, good to see him stay out of foul trouble. But 17pts on 17 attempts is far from good. Thats 1pt per attempt, factor in a average big fg% and fts, a good number would be between 1.3-1.4pts per attempt.
